I have been with the Toorak Times since April 2012. I worked as Senior Editor of the Toorak Times until 2023, when I retired. I now work as a special features contributor for both the Toorak Times and Tagg. I've been in the Australian music scene as a musician since 1964, and have worked in radio and TV and newspapers (when they were actually printed on paper) as well as working in the film industry, as the Film Unit manager on Homicide for several years. I also have extensive experience in audio production and editing.

listen to older voices: grant young – part 1

This is the third and final program featuring the Life & Times story of Grant Young.

Grant is a Baby Boomer. He was born in 1949 and bought up in West Geelong. Over the past two shows we have learned a lot about Grant, who never completed a solid education having left school at 14. However he made it clear in previous programs that learning is not just important to him, it is a life-long activity.

We have also learned that Grant is a man of conviction and his convictions would all seem to be grounded in reality. He is the first to admit, his interpersonal skills haven’t been the best, especially when it comes to marriage. He was divorced from his first wife, and separated from his second – yet, as he shares his thoughts he reveals a man who has, with help, been able to assess himself and, to have developed a good insight into what makes him tick.

This weeks program continues to reinforce this as he shares how he has developed an understanding of not just his own behaviours, but those of others.

Not unexpectedly, we spend some time discussing COVID lockdown and the impact this has had upon him. As a result, Grant willingly shares with us the various ideas he has formed for reconnecting with his community – something that is probably an issue with many older people.

Finally, Grant touches upon the issues of vaccination, anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theories. One thing you can be certain of, there are no ‘dead” moments in his program.

We start with Grant and I discussing the issues around insight and behaviour.
