The Penelopiad

The Penelopiad
THE PENELOPIAD
By Margaret Atwood
Directed by Kristin Telfer
Featuring original music by Kristin Stefanoff

23 May to 1 June 2025
Little Theatre

Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad is an adaptation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, told from the perspective of Odysseus' wife Penelope.

Penelope tells her story from the afterlife, from miraculous birth to marriage with the cunning Odysseus. When war erupts over her cousin Helen’s betrayal, Penelope is left to fend off relentless suitors, relying on her loyal maids to survive. But in death, those same maids return, not just to witness her story—but to remind her of the role she played in the tragic ending to theirs.

'Didn't I wait, and wait, and wait, despite the temptation - almost the compulsion - to do otherwise? And yet what have I amounted to (...)? An edifying legend. A stick used to beat other women with.'

The Revlon Girl

The Revlon Girl
Aberfan, Wales, 1966. A coal waste landslide cascades down the mountainside engulfing a school where 116 children die.

Four bereaved mothers meet regularly and, whilst ashamed to feel frivolous, invite the Revlon make-up girl to give them beauty tips because they’d “let themselves go” in the aftermath of this heartbreaking tragedy.

Whilst the play echoes with sadness, it charms with very real humour - and demonstrates that even lipstick can bring a touch of hope.

Sydney Film Festival
The 72nd Sydney Film Festival (4–15 June 2025) promises an exhilarating celebration of cinema, blending family-friendly magic with bold, inclusive storytelling. This year’s Family program features two must-see adventures: the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, a visually stunning reimagining of the beloved tale, and Night of the Zoopocalypse, a hilarious animated zombie comedy executive-produced by horror legend Clive Barker. These films offer unforgettable big-screen experiences, perfect for sparking a lifelong love of movies in young audiences.

At the heart of the festival is the Screenability program, now in its ninth year, showcasing six groundbreaking films by filmmakers living with disability. Highlights include Life After—a Sundance-winning documentary on assisted dying and disability rights—and Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore, an intimate portrait of the Oscar-winning actor and activist. Alongside award-winning international features, the program spotlights three powerful Australian shorts, including Grace Tame’s moving reflection on autism and With Love, Lottie, a charming teen romance. These films challenge perceptions and amplify vital, often overlooked perspectives.

From epic dragon battles to thought-provoking disability narratives, SFF 2025 is a vibrant, inclusive cinematic journey. Festival Director Nashen Moodley emphasizes its commitment to accessibility, ensuring everyone—from young families to seasoned film lovers—can experience the magic of storytelling. The full lineup launches on 7 May 2025, but one thing is already clear: this year’s festival will inspire, entertain, and leave a lasting impact
