Stella – The Miles Franklin Story

Stella - The Miles Franklin Story
STELLA: The Miles Franklin Story – feat. Monique diMattina, Alma Zygier & Fem Belling

Songs, skits and gossip from a musical in development.

Acclaimed Australian composer/lyricist Monique diMattina presents a concert work-in-progress version of her newest project – STELLA: The Miles Franklin Story.

Sharing songs, stories, gossip and skits from this musical in development, Monique and her all-star chamber orchestra tell the extraordinary life story of Australian author Stella Miles Franklin.

Starring ALMA ZYGIER and FEM BELLING and featuring

The Brindabella String Quartet:

Fem Belling, Xani Kolac, Esther Henderson, Kalina Krusteva

The Talbingo Band:

Monique diMattina, Cat Canteri, Adrian Perger, Sam Lemann, Ben Robertson

Although the Miles Franklin Award is Australia’s most prestigious literary prize, most Australians are unaware that Miles was a woman, let alone the details of her extraordinary life.

Weaving together songs, gossip and Stella Miles Franklin’s own words, the show brings audiences on an epic journey from Franklin’s Snowy Mountains childhood to fame as the young author of My Brilliant Career, years battling for women’s suffrage and labour rights in the USA and UK, WWI field work, creative struggles and legacy as a trailblazing champion of Australian art, conservation and culture.

STELLA: The Miles Franklin Story will make you laugh, cry and love what Stella called ““our unique, inebriating, laughing, haunting, wistful, brooding, ancient, ageless, siren land”

Winter Solstice Dark Cabaret with Jex Lopez and Janty Blair

Winter Solstice Dark Cabaret with Jex Lopez and Janty Blair
The Winter Solstice is an astronomical event, marking the longest night of the year. This darkness has been celebrated around the world since ancient times. First Nations Wurdi Youang stone arrangement near Ballarat is evidence of marking the Winter Solstice for some 11000 years. This inaugral Winter Solstice Dark Cabaret is an invitation to celebrate this time of year with the intelligent lyrics and bold vaudevillian piano magic of Jex Lopez and the political humour of Janty Blair, proud Butchulla, Mununjhali and Woppaburra woman. They will be joined by a range of local artists taking you on a ceremonial journey with ritual, fire performance, didgeridoo playing, spoken word, First Nations story telling, a tea ceremony and much more. The Winter Solstice marks the new sun cycle and as such we invite the audience to make a new years affirmation which will be on display as an installation on the night. Please join us for a Dark Cabaret to remember.

A true performer, JEX LOPEZ uses intelligent lyrics, dramatic, velvety voicing and bold vaudevillian piano magic to visibly move audiences with stories laden with truth and social conscience. From fairy tales to Latin divas, to circus arts, Lopez draws inspiration from around the world and shares art in many forms through music, costume, poetry and humour. Intrinsically tied to their identity as a queer Latinex with Portuguese Indian heritage, their music is courageous and timeless, reaching across generations and cultures as Jex responds to our times and strives to heal our collective grief. Their music has been called a ‘gateway drug to deeper spiritual growth.’ An injection of passion and emotion, Lopez is an artist like no other; the theatrical, satirical and unique delivery of these powerful songs is not to be missed. Jex is joined on stage at the Brunswick Ballroom by queer composer Tilly Jones on Cello and trans non-binary political folk songwriter Myki on guitar and soaring harmonies. These three sensitive yet powerful performers create breathtaking moments in art.

Matt Joe Gow and Kerryn Fields

Matt Joe Gow and Kerryn Fields
'I Remember You' is the highly anticipated album from Matt Joe Gow & Kerryn Fields. This very special matinée show will be the official album launch where the duo, alongside 7 piece band, will perform the brand new album in its entirety for the very first time before their tour of Australia and New Zealand. This is not one to be missed.

With multiple awards to their names and thousands of miles between them, Matt Joe Gow & Kerryn Fields are bonafide masters of their craft, having discovered a natural chemistry as performers, the union of their songwriting enables them to explore new depths in their music.

“Like Presley and Joplin at a dream jam” Post To Wire

The album was written on the road and features a strong connection to Aotearoa, Matt Joe Gow grew up in Dunedin in the South Island, a place with bad weather and good music, meanwhile Kerryn Fields was raised in the North Island with one hand on guitar and the other firmly upon her heart.

Over the past year, the duo have captivated audiences across New Zealand and Australia with extensive touring, gracing renowned stages including the Tussock Country Music Festival, The National Folk Festival, Nannup Music Festival and many more.

“Glorious from the get go” Countrytown

Layered with honest songwriting and ragged instrumentation I Remember You is their true story. Equal parts uplifting and introspective, exploring themes of love, loss and the indelible marks left by the places we call home.

“You’ll need to put it on repeat” Beat Magazine

Maxim Vengerov in Recital with Polina Osetinskaya

Maxim Vengerov in Recital with Polina Osetinskaya
Accompanied by the brilliant pianist Polina Osetinskaya, the two will delight audiences with a demanding program including works by Ravel, Franck and Prokofiev.

Secure your seats for this rare opportunity to witness the magic of these two phenomenal artists, who have been thrilling crowds across the world including recent sold-out recitals at Carnegie Hall. Get ready for an unforgettable night of music.

Maxim Vengerov

Universally hailed as one of the world’s finest musicians, and often referred to as the greatest living string player in the world today, Grammy award winner Maxim Vengerov also enjoys international acclaim as a conductor and is one of the most in-demand soloists.

Born in 1974, he began his career as a solo violinist at the age of five, won the Wieniawski and Carl Flesch international competitions at the age of 10 and 15 respectively, studied with Galina Tourchaninova and Zakhar Bron, made his first recording at the age of 10, and went on to record extensively for high-profile labels including Melodia, Teldec and EMI, earning Grammy and Gramophone artist of the year awards.

Polina Osetinskaya

In the 2023/24 season, pianist Polina Osetinskaya made several solo debuts at the Berlin Philharmonic, in London, and at Laeiszhalle in Bach’s concerts without a conductor. She also performs in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Israel, Cyprus, USA and South America. Polina has performed with Maxim Vengerov in numerous concert halls across America during their tours.

Five Stars - It is as if Vengerov has taken each note and taken it as close to perfection as is humanly possible ... the way he finds the music in the virtuosic madness is what makes his playing so inspiring.

Sydney Morning Herald
Vengerov justifies the hype that sees him placed as the finest before the public today…There was nothing to fault, for here was a recital which must immediately rank not only amongst the finest witnessed this year, but in all my years of concertgoing.

Limelight
Maxim Vengerov enthralled his audience with incomparable musicianship and an often dazzling technique.
