Los Angeles-based four-piece Street Fruit closed out 2025 with the striking new video for their groovy, psychedelic single “Hey Operator”, taken from their sophomore album Strange Tanks. The record, released earlier this year, solidifies the band’s reputation for crafting a self-contained, unpredictable musical universe.
Originally reunited in 2019, long-time collaborators Philipp Minnig (Sugar & Gold, Dura-Delinquent) and Hans Dobbratz (Gravid Wives, Dura-Delinquent) were joined by drummer Tiffanie Lanmon (Mirror Travel, Jess Williamson, Suki Waterhouse) and bassist Cyrus Gengras (Kevin Morby, Jessica Pratt), creating a four-piece capable of music as at home in a backyard punk show as it is in a stadium. The band’s signature sound, a mix of elastic, lurching riffs, slinky rhythms, and melodies that swing between playful and punishing, continues to evolve on Strange Tanks, now incorporating moments of romance, repose, and redemption alongside their trademark caustic humour.
The “Hey Operator” video is a psychedelic, 70s-infused fever dream, blending garage rock swagger, purple-haze visuals, and tongue-in-cheek surrealism. Lyrically, the song subverts the archetypal street-drug anthem, transforming encounters with shadowy figures into a plaintive, serpentine narrative that underscores Street Fruit’s knack for dissolving musical boundaries.
Rooted in decades of collaboration, the band’s story stretches back to 1991, when Hans and Philipp first bonded over sound, fire, and sheer curiosity. Today, Street Fruit’s music spans eras but remains unmistakably their own, drawing on influences from Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Cramps to Kevin Morby and Cass McCombs. With “Hey Operator”, the band delivers a psychedelic burst that is vibrant, strange, and entirely singular, further proof that Street Fruit continue to carve out a vivid, unpredictable world of their own making.
