“There’s still a part of you in a part of me, do you feel it too?” That line sits right in the middle of Jake Pattinson’s ‘Part of Me’, and it’s the moment the whole song clicks into focus. It’s not a big, dramatic hook. It’s quieter than that, and somehow it hits harder for it.
What struck me most listening to this one is how little it’s actually about the ex. Jake’s said as much himself: people talk a lot about missing a partner, but not enough about missing everything that came with them. He lost a pub in Doncaster he used to play gigs at, a family that had folded him in, a version of himself that only made sense in that world. That’s what ‘Part of Me’ is actually mourning, and it’s a far more interesting song for it.
Sonic touchstones like The Killers and Bruce Springsteen are all over this, big synths, driving guitars, a chorus that’s built to be shouted back. But it never feels borrowed. Knowing it was recorded in Jake’s spare bedroom, with a mate tracking drums in his own loft, changes how you hear it. This isn’t a song chasing polish. It’s one built from real nights, real people and, going by the artwork, a real camera pointed at Jake by the person the whole thing is about.
Third single in, and Jake Pattinson is proving he’s got more to say than most.
