Twin Phase Has Done the Work. ‘One Way Out’ Is the Proof.

The Detroit indie-pop project’s second single is groove-driven, emotionally direct, and built for repeat plays

Some artists spend years learning their craft in other people’s shadows. Marcus Assenmacher spent his writing rooms, studios, and stages alongside Teddy Geiger, Lauv, and Grammy-winning producer Ricky Reed — absorbing, contributing, refining. Twin Phase is what happens when that experience finally turns inward.

‘One Way Out’ is the Detroit project’s second single, and it arrives with the confidence of someone who has nothing left to prove behind the scenes and everything to say in front of them. Produced entirely by Marcus Assenmacher at SayHeySounds in Ableton Live, the track is a masterclass in hybrid construction – programmed drums locked in tight against live performances, electric guitar cutting through a bed of synthesisers and bass, vocals sitting right at the intersection of vulnerable and assured. It’s meticulous work that never sounds laboured.

Sonically, ‘One Way Out’ sits squarely in the nu-disco and alternative R&B pocket Twin Phase has been quietly establishing since debut single ‘Wired The Same’ : a release that earned 30 confirmed placements and a 27% curator acceptance rate on its first campaign. Roosevelt and Chromeo are the obvious reference points, but there’s a directness to Marcus Assenmacher’s songwriting that pushes Twin Phase into its own lane.

That directness is the track’s real weapon. Marcus Assenmacher describes ‘One Way Out’ as exploring “the tension between holding on to what feels familiar and accepting that real growth often requires letting go” — and the production earns every word of that. This is music about vulnerability that doesn’t ask for sympathy; it just asks you to move.

With a debut album building on the horizon, Twin Phase is one of the more quietly essential independent projects in the current indie-pop landscape. ‘One Way Out’ is the kind of track that rewards a playlist spot and justifies a second listen. Give it both.
