Introducing Emily-Jane Conidi, a talented singer-songwriter hailing from Melbourne, Australia. She gained widespread recognition during season 11 of The Voice Australia in 2022, where her stunning rendition of ‘This Is Me’ captivated audiences and earned her a spot on Team Jess, guided by the incredible Jessica Mauboy. Emily-Jane’s musical journey started at the tender age of 7, thanks to her mentor Jennifer Kerr, who nurtured her strong work ethic and versatility across various genres.
With a rich background that includes stage musicals, appearances in TV series like Neighbours, and features on shows such as Studio 10, Emily-Jane has honed her craft and expanded her artistic repertoire. In addition to her musical pursuits, she serves as the Artistic Director of the Shine Vocal Competition, an esteemed platform for emerging talent in Australia. Recently, Emily-Jane teamed up with Magnus Murphy to create her debut single, “Fireproof,” a powerful anthem that embodies resilience and the journey of rebuilding oneself against all odds.
I have been following Emily-Jane Conidi since first catching her live performance at eXposure held at Kindred Studios in 2023. Keep reading to catch my chat with Emily-Jane Conidi.
What initially inspired you to start making music?
“My mum will always tell people I sung before I spoke full sentences and growing up I would sing everything. As a single mother of 2 back in the early 2000’s it was very hard financially, so luckily for me I had my grandparents who paid for me to have vocal lessons and because of this, my late Grandfather will always be my musical inspiration.”
Was there a specific moment or experience that made you decide to start playing instruments alongside singing, or did it come naturally over time?
“I don’t play any instruments only voice! Although I would loooooooooove to learn drums!”
How do your personal experiences and emotions influence the way you write and produce your music?
“I suffer with severe anxiety and panic disorder. Sadly, I can’t remember the last day that I went without a panic attack. Writing and singing and just being on stage helps me to forget all of that. It’s like an instant anxiety relief.”
What’s been the most unforgettable moment in your career so far, and what made it so special?
“There has been so many, but I would definitely say being on The Voice Australia stage and turning 4 chairs was pretty damn amazing!!”
What’s been one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your music career, and how did you overcome it?
“Being a bigger girl in the music industry is always difficult. I have sometimes felt like I haven’t belonged or like I need to be someone else in order to be seen or heard but, I just have to remind myself that not everyone is your typical blonde, short, skinny, model looking type girl and it’s okay to be different in this world we live in.”
What exciting projects or goals do you have lined up for 2025, and how do you plan to push your music to new heights?
“I am currently planning my single release which is super exciting!! I have been working very closely with my manager, Johnno which I am really excited about! Big things are coming and I’m soooo excited to share it with the world!”
