DR WIPPIT – ‘YUP’ – A SHOT OF RAP ROCK CONFIDENCE FROM THE COLORADO MOUNTAINS

There is something quietly radical about an artist who has spent thirty-odd years making music entirely on his own terms and arrived at a point of genuine, unforced confidence. Dr Wippit, the Chicago-bred guitarist and vocalist now operating out of the Colorado mountains, has released ‘Yup’ — and it is a statement.

Built from a production accident that turned into a foundation, the track began when Dr Wippit rerouted a MIDI drum beat through a bass guitar patch in FL Studio. What emerged was a low-slung groove sturdy enough to carry live Ibanez Iceman guitar and keyboard layers, and the whole thing locks together with the kind of physical momentum that characterises the best rap rock records. It sits in a tradition that runs through 311’s sun-bleached funk-punk and the Beastie Boys’ restless genre-hopping — music that refuses to be tidy about its influences and is better for it.

The rap rock tag fits, but only loosely. Dr Wippit’s background spans hard rock airplay in Chicago with Chronic Jaywalker, ska and hip-hop with The Kenilworth Project, and years of solo work that has quietly accumulated into something harder to categorise. ‘Yup’ carries all of that — the guitar work has rock muscle, the rhythmic engine has hip-hop ancestry, and the whole thing moves with the ease of someone who stopped worrying about genre a long time ago.

Lyrically, the track is about confidence in the fullest sense: not arrogance, but the settled self-assurance of someone who has been around long enough to know where he stands. It is, as Dr Wippit puts it, about “feeling confident enough about where you’ve been and where you’re going that you’re ready to take everyone there.” That framing matters. This is not the performed bravado of someone trying to convince themselves. It sounds like a man who has genuinely done the arithmetic and liked the result.

What makes ‘Yup’ worth paying attention to is not just the track itself but what it represents. Dr Wippit is an artist re-entering the fray with fresh releases, live shows planned, and more music confirmed. For listeners fatigued by music that sounds like it was made by algorithm, there is real pleasure in something this direct, this physical, and this clearly made by a human being who loves playing guitar.
