Vague Notion Expand Their Cinematic Universe on New EP ‘GLOW’

Vague Notion return with GLOW, a six-track EP that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a continuous emotional landscape. Emerging from Nelson, British Columbia, the duo continue to refine a sound built on atmospheric indietronica, post-punk tension, and cinematic electronics that unfold with deliberate pacing. Across its 22-minute runtime, GLOW leans into contrast; light and shadow, restraint and release, intimacy and scale.

Since forming in 2013, Vague Notion have developed a distinct identity rooted in collaboration between vocalist and synth architect Cheryl Janzen and multi-instrumentalist guitarist Bevan Early. Janzen’s vocal presence remains central throughout, cool and grounded but emotionally charged, often carrying a directness that cuts through the haze of production. Her dual role as vocalist and co-producer reinforces the sense that these tracks are shaped from the inside out rather than layered on top.

Early’s guitar work adds a countercurrent to the electronic foundation, drawing influence from jazz phrasing and West and South African guitar traditions. Rather than acting as traditional indie guitar lines, his parts function as rhythmic architecture; interlocking with synths and percussion to create shifting momentum. The result is a sound that feels alive in motion, constantly reconfiguring itself without losing cohesion.

GLOW also reflects the duo’s increasing confidence in emotional scale. Where earlier releases leaned heavily into introspective textures, this EP introduces brighter melodic edges and a sense of forward propulsion. Tracks like “We Made It So” and “Peace Dub” sit alongside more abstract, narrative-driven moments such as “Visceral Reaction” and “Book Of Time,” creating a dynamic push and pull between clarity and abstraction.

Ultimately, GLOW reinforces Vague Notion’s place in the evolving landscape of experimental indie electronic music. It is a work shaped by environment as much as intention; echoes of British Columbia’s mountainous terrain seem embedded in its spacious production and emotional shifts. The result is an EP that doesn’t just invite listening, but immersion, as it traces the contours of memory, movement, and transformation.
