Stage vs screen acting. It’s a debate that has been raging for decades, and one which is still going strong today. But what exactly are these two different types of acting, and what are the key differences between them? As an aspiring actor, you may often hear the advice that “film > theatre” when it comes to becoming famous. This might make you think that there is no point in investing your time or energy in stage acting if film is where it’s at. But here’s the thing: while there are many people who believe that stage acting won’t get you anywhere, this couldn’t be further from the truth! In this blog post, we look into the key differences between stage and screen acting, comparing acting techniques so that you can decide whether one or the other is right for you!

What is Stage Acting?

Stage acting, or theatre acting, is when an actor performs on an operatic or theatrical stage in front of live audiences. Stage actors might perform in an open-air theatre, an indoor theatre, or a theatre in the round. Theatre has a long history, and in Shakespeare’s time, acting was very different from what it is today. Stage acting usually takes place in rehearsals in front of a small audience during the “out-of-doors” summer months and indoors for the rest of the year. During the rehearsal period, the actors will be expected to attend several hours of “reproducibility” each day, where they will learn the lines, movements, and actions of their character. Stage actors will sometimes work with an “assistant director” to help them remember their lines and their actions, sometimes using notes or prompts.

What is Screen Acting?

Screen acting, on the other hand, is when an actor performs in front of a live camera in a studio, with the intention of having their performance recorded onto film or video, to be watched by an audience at a later date. The camera is typically placed in front of the actor so that the focus is on them and their facial expressions, body language, and gestures. When it comes to screen acting, the “smaller the better” is the name of the game. Stage actors need to remember their lines, movements, and actions, while screen actors need to concentrate on facial expressions, body language, and gestures. Screen actors might use a “script coach” or a “dialogue coach” to help them with their lines, or they might use an earpiece and “concentration prompts” to help them remember their lines.

The key differences between stage and screen acting

– Rehearsal: While both types of actors will need to familiarize themselves with their lines and movements before the performance, stage actors will usually use the “out-of-doors” summer period to do this. Screen actors, on the other hand, will often rehearse in a studio, perhaps with other actors, and might start filming early on in the rehearsal process. – Dramatic Skills: Stage actors are often required to use a lot of dramatic skills in their performance, such as changing their voice, altering their facial expressions, or using hand gestures. Screen actors, on the other hand, rarely need to use dramatic skills, as the camera will focus on their facial expressions. – Visual Skills: Stage actors need to use a lot of visual skills in their performance, such as creating an environment, moving around the stage, or manipulating props. Screen actors, on the other hand, need to have an awareness of the camera, and should be careful not to get too close to it or “interfere” with it in any way.

Why is it Important to Know the Difference?

As you can see from the examples above, there are many differences between stage and screen acting, so it’s important to understand these if you are planning to take one of the two routes. It’s easy to think that you can cross over and do both, but unless you’re very experienced, this might not be the best idea. Instead, you should focus your energy on one area, and you will get much more out of it. Again, it’s important to note that there is no “right” or “wrong” type of acting; there is just what’s right for you. If you are unsure about the differences between stage and screen acting, it’s worth doing some research to help you decide!

Summing up

Stage and screen acting are two very different forms of performance, but whichever you choose, it’s important to remember that there are many differences between the two. If you are just starting out as an actor, it’s important to decide which area of performance is right for you, and focus your energy there. If you are an aspiring actor, it’s important to understand the key differences between stage and screen acting, so that you can decide which is best for you!
