As part of the Melbourne Festival Japanese installation artist Chiharu Shiota has brought 3 of her massive structures here to Melbourne and went along to the city to have a look. It was the closing day so there were not a lot of people about, but a continuous trickle was wandering in from Swanston Street.
Walking into a stark and mainly empty Melbourne Town Hall main room I see Chiharu Shiota’s woolen webbed, steel framed, sculptural labyrinth (First House, 2014) standing bright and mysterious in the middle of the room.
The bright red string, 3-dimensional weave of perfect density through the structure, seems to create an organic portal between the interior and exterior of the sculpture giving it portraying a connectivity between ourselves and the physical world.
Supporting the theme of the home within whilst I was present a Japanese Tea ceremony was being enjoyed by a group following the proceedings well as World Music a range of amazingly complex instrumentalists from all over the globe continuously rotating on stage.
