Seattle’s fast-rising alternative outfit Sharkeologist returns with “There Will Be Bread,” a ferocious and hook-laden single that channels existential anxiety into a burst of high-energy indie rock. Lifted from their forthcoming EP TAXIDERMY IS FOREVER, due this May, the track captures a band confidently leaning into the chaotic blend of styles that has helped them quickly stand out in the Pacific Northwest scene.
From the opening moments, “There Will Be Bread” moves with restless momentum. Crunching guitars lock into a driving rhythm section while shimmering keys weave through the mix, creating a sound that feels equally rooted in indie rock, punk urgency, and Seattle’s grunge lineage. The track pulses with a kinetic energy that makes it easy to imagine echoing through packed club venues, its sharp riffs and punchy grooves practically demanding movement.
One of the track’s most striking moments comes in the form of an unexpected saxophone appearance by Grammy Award–winning musician Johnny Butler, whose bursts of brass cut through the guitars with a surprising flair. Rather than feeling out of place, the saxophone adds an extra layer of unpredictability, reinforcing the band’s willingness to experiment without losing the raw edge of their sound.
Lyrically, the song wrestles with the uneasy question of whether the connections we rely on are truly genuine or simply transactional. Framed through the uneasy relationship between a patient and a therapist, the track explores doubt, vulnerability, and the uncomfortable suspicion that money, or “bread”, might sit at the heart of more relationships than we’d like to admit.
That weighty subject matter might sound heavy on paper, but Sharkeologist have a knack for turning internal spirals into something explosive and strangely uplifting. The band wraps those anxious reflections in a relentlessly danceable groove, creating a song that feels both cathartic and self-aware. It’s music built for shouting along with friends while confronting the same messy questions about trust, self-interest, and connection.
Recorded at Seattle’s Exex Audio with Johnny Nails and mastered by Ed Brooks at Resonant Mastering, “There Will Be Bread” captures the band’s raw live intensity while sharpening its sonic edges. The production balances grit with clarity, ensuring every pounding drum hit and buzzing guitar riff lands with maximum impact.
With this latest release, Sharkeologist continue to carve out a distinctive lane within Seattle’s alternative landscape. “There Will Be Bread” is loud, restless, and packed with personality, a track that proves even the most uncomfortable thoughts can become thrilling when amplified through roaring guitars and a band fully committed to the moment.
