Hugo Race brings his signature haunting vocals and evocative guitar work, while Michelangelo Russo, known for his work with The True Spirit and solo projects, adds hypnotic layers of electric harp and psychedelic textures.
Their live performances are highly improvisational, emotionally resonant, and unlike anything else — each show a one-of-a-kind sonic experience that redefines the boundaries of blues.
Their previous collaboration, John Lee Hooker’s World Today (2017), was lauded for its reinvention of delta blues, praised as “a psychedelic ghost blues of a profound sort” (Musikreviews.de) and “hypnotic rhythms and haunting guitars” (Eclipsed, Germany).

Hugo Race & Gianni Maroccolo announce Italian tour dates for new album THE VIGIL!
Lyrical and existential, alchemical and wild, The Vigil draws inspiration from the symbolic concept of wakefulness, marked by the soft ticking of minutes and hours that pass through the night, generating a suspended space where human thought and experience emerge and reign supreme. An evocative tale that invites you to lose yourself and find yourself again through the notes that make the music of Hugo Race and Gianni Maroccolo a true sonic ritual, capable of transcending linear time to enter the realm of profound perception. Nocturnal creatures in search of a shared wakefulness, the two musicians will embark on a unique tour, which will visit Italy’s major cities starting October 9, 2025. An artistic evolution that promises profound emotions and an atmosphere of intense connection with the audience. On this journey, Hugo Race and Gianni Maroccolo will be accompanied by Tuscan drummer Andrea Pelosini.

CONCEPT
The concept for the album The Vigil was born from the partnership of two eclectic rock icons: Hugo Race, frontman of legendary Australian post-punk band The Wreckery and guitarist of the Bad Seeds, as well as leader of True Spirit and the Fatalists, and Gianni ‘Marok’ Maroccolo, an Italian alternative music and film soundtrack producer and a key figure in the Florentine darkwave scene with Litfiba, CSI, and CCCP. The visionary poetics of the lyrics on The Vigil are narrated through individual stories in the style of Boccaccio’s Decameron, with psychedelic soundscapes framed by experimental electronics and rock instrumentation. An album that defies categorization.
