unions and employers come together to save funeral industry jobs, appeal for operations to continue

Daniel Walton, National Secretary, Australian Workers’ Union:

Early this morning the AWU was made aware of a collapse at Henty Gold Mine in Tasmania. All workers barring one were evacuated.

Search and rescue is now being undertaken and the AWU is on site and supporting workers and emergency services in the rescue effort.

We have reached out to our members and spoken to a number of workers who are understandably shaken.

In circumstances such as these rescue efforts are extremely delicate and sensitive and our full support is with the specialists.

It goes without saying that our thoughts are with the family of the trapped worker at this time.
