Welcome to Listen To Older Voices, a program produced Rob Greaves for Wesley Mission Victoria and podcast through the Toorak Times.
Listen To Older Voices presents the stories, views and opinions of our older citizens. It is predominantly in a life & times format, with interviewees reflecting upon their lives from earliest memories. An underlying principal of the program is to promote the concept of positive ageing, reinforcing the principle that older people have & continue to make a valuable contribution to both their local & wider community.
Jacey Hall interviewed Winnie Jordan in December of 2002 and at that time Win was 73 years of age. Win has a great recollection of her years in both the “old” country – Britain, and her settling into Australia. Among her tales are some amazing stories she was told about Australia prior to coming, and you will laugh at those stories as she tells them. Winnie has a broad east end cockney accent and a sense of humor that goes with it. At 73 years of age she was a lively woman whose tales of the early part of the century in England are stories that you don’t find in the history books, in fact they are far more educative and entertaining.
It becomes evident as we listen that Win is a woman who has completely enjoyed her life and in her words, she was born to be a comedian. Yet underneath her humor there is some solid down to earth philosophy to her views on life and as we listen we learn and understand that even though Win was in the twilight of her life, she still held fears for future generations. This is a really beguiling interview that I’m certain you will enjoy.
