It’s easy to keep coming back to how quiet ‘Darling’ is willing to be.
A well chosen title track for his third solo album, ‘Darling’ doesn’t rush to fill space, and once you know he’s playing every instrument on the record himself, that patience starts to feel like the whole point.
Grégory Privat’s background explains a lot of that confidence. Classically trained, then self-taught in improvisation, he’s spent over fifteen years merging jazz with the Creole music of Martinique, building a catalogue of around ten albums along the way. Darling is a natural next step for an artist who’s already collected a Prix Django Reinhardt and a Knighthood in the Order of Arts and Letters.
For anyone who wants the flip side of that stillness, Privat is also releasing a live session of ‘Dwèt Crazy’ from the same album, out 2nd October via Believe Music. It’s fast, loop-built and entirely solo too, just a much more frantic version of the same idea driving ‘Darling’.
