Baby Dave, aka Isaac Holman of Soft Play, joins forces with producer and songwriter The Works for “Wings”, a hypnotic new single that lands somewhere between alternative electronica, rave, disco and spoken word.
Built around floating vocal fragments, clipped guitars, spacious synths and a driving dance beat, “Wings” has an unmistakable late-night energy. Holman’s distinctive spoken delivery keeps the track grounded while The Works’ production creates an atmosphere that feels both otherworldly and physical.
The distant, infectious chorus gives the track its melodic lift, bringing a pop sensibility to an otherwise left-field production. It is the kind of song that works equally well through headphones or at 2am in a dark basement.
Lyrically, the track began with an unlikely source. Holman was inspired by a moth he spotted in the gym, with the idea eventually expanding into themes of humans, raves, life, change and bugs. The result is deliberately open to interpretation.
“Wings” also marks the first in a series of forthcoming releases from Baby Dave and The Works. Their previous collaborations include work across Soft Play projects and Baby Dave’s “Telephobia”, featuring Kate Nash.
For The Works, the collaboration continues a growing run of credits that includes Kate Nash, Soft Play, Lady Bird, Mark Rae and HotWax. For Holman, Baby Dave remains a space to explore the more experimental and electronic side of his creativity.
“Wings” is playful, atmospheric and built for movement, bringing together two distinct creative voices without smoothing away their edges.
