Poking around the cellar and moving wines into some sort of drinking order so I don’t make the same mistake as last Saturday night.
When getting home in a more than happy state I opened a 2016 Velvet Glove Shiraz, which turned out not only to be my last bottle of said wine but far too big for a late-night sip.
Anyway back to the matter at hand, The Rebel Range Shiraz 2015
I found this one at the bottom of the rack and with 7 years of bottle age I thought I should twist its neck with a BBQ for the Grand Prix.
On the nose, there are hints of bright blackberries and red currant with a nice sprinkling of white pepper in the background that also run the length of the plate.
As the wine opened up a little lavender and sweet purple hints emerged wrapt up in a pleasant cleansing acid. I must be honest I think the wine was drinking at its best, it may have aged for a few more years, however, I think I twisted its neck just at the right time.
The Food:
An easy-drinking wine that is priced to please the crowd.
Went well with my up market, BBQ duck, fennel & garlic snags. Served with warm Jersey Royals potatoes in a horse radish sauce.
