TEXAN SINGER-SONGWRITER
ROBERT ELLIS ADDS ADDITIONAL MELBOURNE & SYDNEY SHOWS TO DECEMBER DATES, PERFORMS LIVE COVER OF TROPICAL F**K STORM’S “YOU LET MY TYRES DOWN”!

ELLIS IS PLAYING A HANDFUL OF HEADLINE SHOWS IN ADDITION TO HIS RUN WITH COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS

Following the announcement, a couple of weeks ago, of an intimate solo show at Brisbane’s Stranded on Friday, December 15, and a performance last night at Melbourne’s Merri Creek Tavern – at which he debuted an unexpected cover of local heroes Tropical F**k Storm’s “You Let My Tyres Down” – Texan singer-songwriter Robert Ellis has announced another Melbourne headliner, as well as a Sydney one, both set for this week.

He performs tomorrow night (Tues Dec 12) at The Gem in Collingwood and on Saturday night (Dec 16) at the Enmore Hotel in Enmore. Entry to both shows is free.

Given the rapturous response to last night’s Tropical F**k Storm cover, which was posted on Instagram Stories by none other than Thelma Plum (check it out here), fans can probably expect to hear it at both shows.

Robert also performs with Courtney Marie Andrews this Wednesday night (Dec 13) at the Brunswick Ballroom and Thursday night (Dec 14) at the Eltham Hotel in northern NSW.

Catch the Americana star from Fort Worth, Texas on the road and experience this inspiring musician’s intricate fingerpicking and sharp storytelling in this special summer tour. Not only is ROBERT ELLIS one of America’s finest musicians, he’s also one of the greatest humans to see live. Take note, this show will change your life.

December Australian tourists COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS and ROBERT ELLIS have added an extra show to their upcoming tour. The pair have added a matinee show at the Brunswick Ballroom on Sunday December 10 to their run, which takes in club shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Castlemaine, Archies Creek and Eltham (NSW), as well as the Thirroul Music Festival.

In addition to these shows, Courtney Marie Andrews, who is bringing her band with her to Australia for the first time, is also appearing as a special guest of The Tesky Brothers at their big shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

It is with great pleasure that Love Police presents the magnetic vibes of one of Americana’s shining stars COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS who will be joined by the delicate, reedy tenor of none other than ROBERT ELLIS.

It’s a musical match made in acoustic folk-godly heaven, with this sublime pairing of two of the greatest American contemporary singer songwriters around today. Phoenix-born Courtney Marie Andrews will be bringing her band with her for the first time to Australia after a successful solo run around the country in 2021 where the poetic songstress made many friends and fans.

Fresh from releasing the acclaimed Loose Future last year, Courtney’s dreamy and joyful songs written on the honey-coloured shores of Cape Cod, will be shared along the East Coast as well as supporting The Teskey Brothers on their welcome home summer tour.

Also adventuring off the back of a new release is Robert Ellis following on from his heartfelt and nostalgic Yesterday’s News (2023, Love Police Records & Tapes).

Robert’s song writing style has been praised as a ‘sharp eye for storytelling’ by Rolling Stone, his intricate fingerpicking likened to Nick Drake and Richard Thompson, but his songs make you stop in your place and take note.

We’re excited to have this winning combo with us for this tasty tour over summer. Join us for the singer songwriter fantasy this December.

COURTNEY MARIE ANDREWS
“Courtney Marie Andrews’ ‘Loose Future’ is an openhearted stunner…The album feels like a series of warm embraces: of Andrews’ past musical selves, of her past mistakes and misfortunes, and of her bright, beautifully uncertain present and future. “ – Rolling Stone

“The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter teams up with producer Sam Evian for an assured, exploratory, and warm record that mirrors a newly opened heart.” – Pitchfork

“‘Loose Future’ positions Andrews between Waxahatchee and Angel Olsen, a triumvirate of singer-songwriters finding new alleyways in and out of familiar territory. These 10 absorbing songs, likewise, are testaments to remaining in motion.” – Mojo

Arizona’s Courtney Marie Andrews, who has been compared to ’60s and ’70s greats like Bonnie Gentry and Linda Ronstadt, is no stranger to Australia. We last saw her here in March 2022, when she toured solo on the back of her then-latest album Old Flowers, which followed some big life changes and which the NME described as “devastatingly intimate and open-hearted”, “meditative” and “exquisite”, and which Rolling Stone said brought “to mind classic Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.”

Old Flowers, which also received a 5-star review in the Times in the UK, continued Andrews’ international ascent which began in 2016 with Honest Life and which took a further step with May Your Kindness Remain in 2018. 2021 also saw the publication of her first book of poetry, Old Monarch, and the first gallery showings of her paintings.

Following Old Flowers’ 2020 Grammy nomination, and due to Covid restrictions, Courtney, for the first time in her young nomadic life, was forced off the road and to remain at home. What resulted was a period of self-discovery that has ultimately led to the new album, Loose Future, which features the ABC Country playlisted single “Thinking On You”.

Whereas Old Flowers was a beautiful and emotional break-up record, Loose Future is a bright, dynamic, falling-in-love record. Courtney’s got a new story to tell, backed by a strong new musical direction, and a show-stopping collection of songs. And when she presents them to her Australian fans for the first time this December, she’ll also be doing it for the first time in Australia with her band behind her.

ROBERT ELLIS
An ever evolving, creatively restless renaissance man and a regular Australian visitor over the past decade, Texas’s Robert Ellis redefined himself yet again with his new album Yesterday’s News, which was released in May.

Over the course of five previous solo albums, Ellis has flirted with everything from Paul Simon and John Prine to Elton John and Joni Mitchell, zigging whenever he was expected to zag in a series of sonic and visual transformations that ran the gamut from Redneck Steely Dan to Lone Star Liberace. NPR has hailed his “musical daring and impeccable songcraft,” while Rolling Stone praised his “sharp eye for storytelling,” and The New York Times lauded his writing as an emotional “gut punch.”

Coming off his raucous 2019 album Texas Piano Man, Ellis changed course again and is now embracing a raw minimalist approach that prizes patience and restraint above all else. Recorded live to tape in just two days, it’s as stripped-down as it gets, with his delicate, reedy tenor accompanied only by nylon string guitar, upright bass, and the occasional piece of handheld percussion. The arrangements are harmonically sophisticated, drawing on the open tunings and intricate fingerpicking of English songwriters like Nick Drake or Richard Thompson. Ellis’s performances are similarly subtle and nuanced, tapping into the bittersweet longing of Chet Baker and the playful poignancy of Bill Evans and Jim Hall. What emerges is a record that’s not quite folk and not quite jazz, a series of intimate, unhurried meditations on growth and maturity, hope and regret, desire and contentment, all delivered by an artist learning to let go and get quiet, to slow down and appreciate the tiny little miracles that make life worth living.
