MOTHERLOD_^E (2023)

Kill them. WooHoo them. Control them. Save them. Eat them. How long can someone have control over the world before their dirty laundry is reflected back at them?

Our once avid teenage player is now a disillusioned adult revisiting her old PC to jump back into a world she left behind. Watch her dictate sims’ personalities, sexuality and humanity, whilst our two-dimensional friends are confined to their single household.

Our player’s virtual utopia is not everything she remembers it to be. And as she delves deeper into the Sims gameplay, she is left to confront her own ambition, curiosity and mortality.

The sims have helped a generation of queer players process uncharted thoughts they didn’t know how to voice. It created a sanctuary to try on different personas, and explore gender and identity. MOTHERLOD_^E is a dark unveiling of the tension between innocent exploration and the malevolent results of playing God unchecked.

Frenzy is the working partnership between Belle Hansen and Matilda Gibbs, and Frenzy’s mission is to create professional opportunities for early career artists. Boasting a team of 20 artists, MOTHERLOD^E promises to be an unbridled expression of morbid curiosity, part virtual reality and part nostalgic game fantasy.

MOTHERLOD^E premiers at Theatre Works for a limited season 4-14 January 2023.
