Listen To Older Voices : John Skrinjar – Part 2 Welcome to Listen To Older Voices, a program produced
by Rob Greaves for Uniting Melba and podcast through
the Toorak Times & Tagg

Listen To Older Voices presents the stories, views and opinions of our older citizens. It is predominantly in a life & times format, with interviewees reflecting upon their lives from earliest memories. An underlying principle of the program is to promote the concept of positive ageing, reinforcing the principle that older people have & continue to make a valuable contribution to both their local & wider community.

In this, the second and final part of the story of John Skrinjar, we learn on arriving in Australia from war torn Austria, his first real job was on the Snowy Mountain Hydro-electric Scheme. There are many stories to listen to including how he was blown up in a mining accident on the scheme. We learn of the circumstances that led him to visit the South African Embassy to immigrate to South Africa to work in their mines.

Yet, as he discovered later, he really was “saved” from going there by meeting Linda, who would later become his wife. His story allows us to follow him and Linda to Melbourne where now they see out their retirement years in a very quiet outer eastern Melbourne retirement village, which is both pleasant, but at the same time also brings its own challenges, as he and Linda age.
