yquem 1958 france bordeaux - 750 ml $1700.00
Over the weekend I was fortunate enough to experience a once in a lifetime, 65 yo glass of wine.
A friend opened a 1958 bottle of 750 ml Yquem.  shared by grateful guests. (A bucket list wine)
How did it taste I hear you ask?
I have never tasted or drank a glass of wine so slowly in my life, It was a wine memory/experience I will take to the grave.
Because getting to taste a wine of this ilk again is slim.
A wine 65 years old with the smell and taste of light apricot decay. In the glass a dark brown onion skin colour.
On the nose, old fruit with a ghost-like glimpse of a disappearing and faint youth.
In the mouth acid although faded was still there. The truth is the wine was still very drinkable and an absolute treat.
Entering the mouth at first mid weight moved into a light molten aged fruit, opening slowly to a pleasing lush ripe but not overly sweet wine. There were ghost-like hints of apricot, with a line of acid that was still present.
The wine had reached an age where it would have been hard to pick it as a French Sauternes if I didn’t have the bottle in front of me.
However if by some slim chance, you do have a bottle of this wine in the cellar open it and drink it while there is still some life left in this old gem.
