Your home needs a patio or deck. It is the perfect way to entertain people or simply enjoy the weather. However, to make the most of this seating area you need to take a little time to design it properly.

Location

You will often see decking built next to the house. There is an obvious reason for this. If you’re sitting out in the evening or eating outside, or even entertaining, you’ll want to be close to the house. It makes it easier to get anything you need.

That’s why the best location is usually next to the house. However, it will depend on the layout of your yard and where your entrance is. It’s possible an area close but not next to the house will suit better. Consider this before you start creating your outside area.

Flooring

Decking is a great option. It’s very easy to add, even if the ground is uneven. It is durable and looks great. However, some people prefer a patio as it is likely to last longer, is easy to clean, and can look fantastic. Patios are generally more difficult to create.

But, either option is good for your outside area, simply choose the material you like the most.

Shade

One of the most important elements of any seating area is shade. In the summer the sun is too hot to sit outside without shade. The right shade can even offer protection from mosquitoes or the rain, allowing you to enjoy your deck or patio even more.

While a gazebo is a viable option, it is likely to get damaged by extreme weather. It’s generally better to look at the awnings for sale near you.

An awning can be wound out when needed and put away the rest of the time. It is more flexible and durable. Best of all, you can get them in a wide variety of sizes and colours, ensuring you have the perfect shade for your seating area.

Lighting

To create the right ambience you need lighting. The level of lighting depends on whether you plan to eat under the lights or simply sit, chat, and perhaps share a drink. The latter needs dimmer mood-setting lighting.

Take a moment to consider this and create your lighting system accordingly. Of course, if you wish, you can add both types of light and simply turn on the ones you need to use.

Plants

Your yard probably has plenty of plants. But, to help create a stunning patio or decking you should add a few at the edges. These help to define the area and make it feel more natural.

Seats

Finally, don’t forget that a good seating and entertaining area needs high-quality seating. You can make pallet benches or invest in the best chairs at your local garden centre. But, whichever you do, you need to make sure they have plenty of cushioning. This will ensure the seats stay comfortable when you’re sitting outside for hours.
