Moving interstate can be daunting, but don’t let the stress knock you off your game. While moving interstate may seem like a very big moving task at hand, each little bit can be achieved bit by bit no matter what sort of time frame you are looking at moving. The best thing to do is keep yourself calm, this will make your family feel relaxed during such a transitional stage. Doing all that needs to be done ahead of time will make sure things go as smoothly and seamlessly as possible during this big transitional phase in life! To help stay organised throughout it all, this could be the only moving checklist you will ever need, which has got everything covered – from exactly what to do through when best to do it.

6-8 Weeks Before Moving Out

Generally, the 6-8 week mark is a good time to implement a moving plan. Ascertain how much you need to be moved, have a look into removalists, get some quotes, and gather some moving supplies. Understand what you need to do with utilities, and schools interstate. Now is the time for you to crucially plan your move. You should make a list of all the things you need to do and ensure that you keep track of them and also check them off. Here are some of the important things to do:

  • Ask for a quote from your furniture removalists to get at least 3 – 5 to ensure that you have a good comparison.
  • Arrange all travel arrangements and accommodation, the sooner you book this, it will start to set everything else in motion.
  • Get moving insurance to protect your belongings, because moving interstate is a costly exercise already. Having broken furniture at the end of your move is the last thing you would want.
  • If you are looking for secure storage options to store your goods for a time, you will need one.
  • For your travel, make sure you check any quarantine requirements this can be different in each state.
  • Make sure your important documents and travel documents are with you, make sure you arrange an essential bag and keep the important things close by.
  • Arrange pet moving services if you have pets and if they have any special requirements when you travel interstate. Such as vaccinations before travelling.
  • Determine if you will need a new driver’s license in the destination state.
  • Arrange for an interstate car transporter if you are not planning on driving to your destination. This is most likely the safest option in transporting any vehicles you may have that you intend to keep. Otherwise, try and sell off your asset before moving.

 1-2 Weeks Before Moving Out

Your workload will increase as you get closer to the move date. If you don’t have the time to pack, hire movers to help. Make sure to keep track of any paperwork that may be required for interstate moves.

  • Get a utility connection set up for your new house. Providers may differ in each state.
  • Having some cash on hand just for emergencies, saves you from finding an ATM or when you are in parts of the country that have no reception.
  • All vaccinations and immunisations that you require are obtained, go to your local GP and find out.
  • Inform your bank that you are moving, and arrange for a new bank to provide services in your destination. Most major banks operate around the country but best to double-check with your current bank.
  • All outstanding bills must be paid, this avoids any bad credit if you simply receive a final bill in your mail after you move.

1 Day Before Moving Out

You must make sure that everything is in order the day before you move. You should finish packing and ensure everything is organized and clean.

  • Get rid of all rubbish and make sure your house is ready for handover.
  • Defrost your freezers and fridges, then dry them. This saves you cleaning at the other end.
  • Make sure you have packed everything.
  • If possible, check into your flights.
  • Keep important documents and valuables close at hand.
  • Make sure your car is ready to be collected if it is being transported.

Moving Date

Make sure that you are ready to go on a moving day after a good night of sleep. You can make your move as efficient and painless as possible by making sure that your boxes are labelled and packed as close as possible to your front door.

  • Hand over keys
  • Turn off all taps and electrical switches.
  • Lock the whole house.
  • Make sure you don’t forget anything or leave anything behind.
  • Get a friend or neighbour to check your mail for the next week just in case you haven’t made arrangements to forward your mail.

This checklist should help you stay organised throughout the entire process. Moving interstate can seem overwhelming. But with the right organizational skills and removalists, you could make your next move a breeze.
