This story begins on 22nd August 1485 on a bloody battlefield in Bosworth, England.

It was always intended  to be a fight to the death that would determine the future of the English Monarchy … and it was just that.

As history clearly reveals, this was the decisive battle that ended the thirty-year War of the Roses when the then King of England, Richard the 3rd, was overwhelmingly defeated and killed by the contender for the throne Henry the 7th.

After the battle, Richard’s body was taken to Leicester and put on display for a Tudor-style public humiliation. His body was then taken to Greyfriars, Leicester, where it was buried in a crude grave in the friary churchyard.

Following the friary’s dissolution and demolition in 1538, all records of the exact location of Richard’s grave were lost. It was long thought that his bones had been unceremoniously thrown into the River Soar at the nearby Bow Bridge.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of a once unknown, history buff 527 years later  the remains of Richard were discovered beneath a car park in Leicester.

This film tells the true story of how an English woman who, although often faced humiliating skepticism from historians, scholars, family and friends, unrelentingly continued with her research for Richard’s remains.

THE LOST KING is an inspiring true story about and untrained amateur historian Philippa Langley who through meticulous research, solves one of England’s most baffling royal mysteries.

Against all odds she refuses to be ignored and dogmatically takes on the country’s most eminent historians. Gradually she convinces them to rethink and eventually rewrite history about one of England’s most controversial kings.

Starring Sally Hawkins as Philippa Langley,  Steve Coogan as John Langley and Harry Lloyd as the upright Richard the 3rd.

Philippa’s quest began when she reads a biography of Richard that brings to light the difference between the historical image of Richard (unflatteringly described by William Shakespeare in his play Richard the 3rd)  as a deformed hunchback and the truth that he was a not so disfigured King.

After systematically scouring the libraries,  engaging in discussions with other Richardians and several sometimes alarming yet revealing chats with the spirit of Richard himself, she is convinced that she knows whereabouts of his true resting place.

Much to the  annoyance of established academia she begins to seek funding to exhume Richard’s  remains from beneath an obscure car park in Leicester.

If you want to be inspired by a fascinating tale of discovery, this humorous approach to a serious and somber tale is intreging in how it tells the tale of how one woman who, when faced with constant criticism, continues to believe in herself and her research.

Quite simply this is a historical delight that categorically proves that history is not always set in stone, even if it is buried beneath it.
