Although the wine has one hell of a long title – it’s only 6 years old and still rather young.

I have been instructed that it is best to Drink from 2025 to 2032, and after drinking it I can vouch for that. It is still young and really needs 10 years of bottle age before I will open the next one.

Pewsey Vale Riesling has been on our tables forever, I am sure it was among the first Rieslings I tasted as a young wine drinker.

However, not many of us may be as familiar with their upper-level range of Rieslings.

  • The Contours Riesling – is one of them.

All plantings at Pewsey Vale Vineyard are propagated from the original 1847 vines. Initially, 56 hectares of Riesling were planted in contoured rows. The several remaining hectares of these vines to this day continue to provide fruit for The Contours Riesling.

Nose:

Rich perfumed lemon fruit with a loving whiff of kerosene. For Riesling lovers like myself, that hint of kero is the holy grail. For most winemakers, however, it’s seen as a wine-making fault.

Colour:

In the glass, a honey straw colour with a fresh green tinge around the outer rim.

In the Mouth:

The rich lemon bouquet of this wine hits you well before it gets to your mouth.

But when it does, hints of minerals, hit the front of the tongue, and begin to stroke your senses with mature round, rich citrus fruit and hints of kerosene, but not oily,  followed by white toast with a touch of, bees wax and many different layers of yellow lemons with bright green lime juice lurking in the background.

If you are a Riesling drinker and for some reason, you have not already tasted, – The Contours Riesling – splash out and give it a go. As it may just change your mind about how good Eden Valley Rieslings can get!

PS. The 1961 Block Eden Valley is the other one to look out for.

Because of our Melbourne weather, lately, I have been cooking a lot of seafood. This wine was just the ticket for homemade Beer battered whiting and a warm potato salad, with baby vine-ripened tomatoes and garlic chives. No dressing.

I drink a lot of rieslings from around the world, and of late Melbourne’s warmer weather has driven me to drink a lot more white wine than usual.

The point is; I have forgotten how good our Rieslings have got over the last 20 years!

Like most of Australia’s wines, they are now on the world stage, up there with the best of the best and still very Australian.
