We’re one week into Melbourne Fringe and Roisin McAlinden’s show Fairytale: Ending begins tomorrow night at Bard’s Apothecary. Roisin is returning to Melbourne after selling out the last weekend at Melbourne Comedy Festival last year. We got to chat with Roisin a bit more about the show, keep reading for a spoiler!
How would you describe Fairytale: Ending in 3 words?
Cheeky, dark and feminist
If Fairytale: Ending was an animal, what animal would it be?
Probably a unicorn: magical and mysterious with a sharp edge (and famously bisexual).
What are your plans post Melbourne Fringe?
I will be taking this show to Adelaide Fringe in 2027, and then hopefully over to the UK.
If Fairytale: Ending had a soundtrack, what hit songs would it be associated with?
Ex-Factor by Lauryn Hill. That song perfectly captures the pain and longing of being in an all-consuming relationship where you can’t tell up from down.
I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor, because it captures the joy of finally recognising your own worth and standing up for what you deserve in love.
What’s one show you recommend other than your own at Melbourne Fringe Festival?
Definitely Bahaa Dabbagh’s show A Lucky Refugee? . Bahaa is so funny and talks about the refugee experience with such nuance and brilliantly dark humour.
What’s a spoiler for Fairytale: Ending that won’t make sense until you see the show?
Let’s just say I’m still in therapy after discovering the troubling roots of my childhood crush on the Beast from Beauty and the Beast during this show.
Where and when is the show happening, and where can we get tickets?
The show is on for Melbourne Fringe, 6th – 10th October at 6.45pm at Bard’s Apothecary in the CBD. Get your tickets at https://www.melbournefringe.com.au/whats-on/events/roisin-mcalinden-fairytale-ending
