Live Theatre: Musical playing at Regent Theatre  Melbourne & Capital Theatre Sydney

Lyrics by Tim Rice -Music By Andrew Lloyd Webber (1967)

In keeping with the biblical storyline, I have to admit, (it may not be a sin but) I am guilty of neglect. For years I have neglected this wonderfully upbeat musical production.

I have no excuse except perhaps I was hesitant because of it’s religious narrative. But then that never prevented me from enjoying several reincarnations of it’s more famous cousin Jesus Christ Superstar and at least investigating it’s lesser successful rival Godspell.

The 2022 Revival of the ‘Joseph…’ enchantingly magical as it (in true bible style) weaves a tale of love, affection, jealousy, betrayal, abandonment, helplessness, opportunity, acceptance, power, redemption and forgiveness.

Presented as a sung-through musical  it has an extremely talented ensemble of both adult and child performers. This colourful production marks the first collaborative work between lyricist Tim Rice and  Andrew Lloyd Webber writing the music.

Based on the character of Joseph from the Bible‘s Book of Genesis it tells how Joseph’s extremely jealous one full brother, ten half-brothers and at least one half-sister plot to sell him into slavery and how he manages through his visionary dreams, intelligence and the grace of God win the Pharoah’s favour and return to show forgiveness to his siblings.

First presented as a 15-minute “pop cantata” in London in 1968, is was a slow burner being at first over shadowed by ‘…Superstar’  whose global success later allowed it to attract much needed attention. Over the years the musical has evolved into the major production that is presented today.

The Melbourn/Sydney production stars Paulini as the Narrator, Euan Fistovic Doidge as Joseph and former AFL star Shane Crawford as Pharaoh in Melbourne and Trevor Ashley stepping into the role in Sydney

The songs, the production, the cast, the spectacle that is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is an experience that is truly heart-warming and joyful.
