Jim Keays Exhibition

0

Rock Legend Jim Keays fronted rock band The Masters Apprentices as singer-songwriter, guitarist and harmonica-player from 1965 to 1972, and had many Top 20 hits in their career.

Keays, as a member of The Masters Apprentices, was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1998. As a solo artist he recorded several albums.  From  2000, he performed in Cotton Keays & Morris alongside Darryl Cotton and Russell Morris.   But unbeknown to his fans, he was also talented in creating beautiful and evocated watercolour paintings with strong emotive powerful  and yet often subtle connections to the landscape or subject matter.  Within this exhibition we get true insight to the multi talented legend.

In July 2007, Keays was diagnosed with myeloma and died in 2014 aged 67

“Jim Keays was a true artist in every sense of the word. A wordsmith, he was best known for crafting lyrics to music, creating songs that became timeless hits – songs that move the spirit of all who hear them.  Such a gift would be more than enough for one lifetime but there was more than meets the eye to the man who was my husband and life-partner for over 25 years.  Jim was also blessed with an innate talent for drawing and painting delicate watercolours. Two years and one month after his passing, it is my privilege and pleasure to invite you to enjoy Jim’s first ever art exhibition, The Secret Life of Rock Legend Jim Keays.   KARIN KEAYS.

When Jim and I first met in 1988, he lived in a big, pink house in high ‘80s style in the Eastern suburbs. We called it the House of Love. Perched on a wall in the family room was a watercolour painting, a period scene, unmistakably Scottish in a small battered frame. It was completely lost amongst the excesses of ‘80s design and flamboyant music memorabilia.

Still, something about it drew my eye; a delicate, almost whimsical quality that would often have me pausing to look into it. One day, I asked Jim how old it was, thinking it had come from Scotland with the Keays family. His answer was not what I expected, “I did it when I was 10 or 11.”

Jim said he had rarely touched watercolours – his favoured medium – since the Masters Apprentices took off in the 60s. He was uncharacteristically shy and self-deprecating about his ability, which I found very touching. Jim’s painting talent was a part of himself that he kept hidden, a vulnerability that he felt safe sharing with me.

Soon after our wedding in 1989, we moved to a period house and I asked Jim if he would do some pictures for our home. He started out with pencils and ink. Jim’s talent for drawing was innate and we soon had beautiful still life drawings decorating our home. His watercolours and brushes were old and his first attempts left Jim feeling frustrated and inadequate at what he felt was a lack of technique. Art supplies became favoured Christmas and birthday gifts and gradually his art kit began to build.

A family holiday to the UK resulted in a series of pen and ink drawings of my favourite medieval locations. Jim would choose a spot with the perspective he liked best, settle on the green grass and create beautiful, delicate pictures that he would present to me… a gift of love so special that our friend, Liz Reid, made them into a series of personal greeting cards for us.

Back in Melbourne, Jim began watercolour classes at the local community centre and thrived on his weekly classes. His fellow students were mainly retired ladies and Jim enjoyed their company, learning new techniques and painting at home, on family holidays and when on the road with Cotton Keays & Morris.

He would bring his latest painting into the lounge room and sheepishly prop it up on the mantle, prefacing its display with an apologetic comment. This was so unlike the man who had put himself and his music on display to the world for decades. I often described Jim’s rock star persona as having more front than Myer and the hide of ten rogue elephants. He never suffered stage fright and any criticism of his antics washed over him like water off a duck’s back but with his painting, he had no armour at all. Jim would give his art away as a gift and paint for charity when asked but he never felt able to exhibit.

Eventually, Jim changed art classes and, under the tutelage of Greg Allan, developed his technique even further. By this time, Jim had been diagnosed with an incurable blood cancer. His paintings became less frequent as the gruelling treatment took its toll. There were periods when the treatment was scaled back and I would encourage him to pick up his brushes again but, as time went on, he felt like it less often.

In the ultimate gift of love and trust, Jim bequeathed all his paintings and artworks to me saying, “They are for you. You’ll know what to do with them.”
Two years and one month after his passing, I now feel ready to share some of the beautiful and poignant art of the creative spirit who was my husband and partner.

It is my privilege and pleasure to invite you to enjoy Jim’s first ever art exhibition, The Secret Life of Rock Legend Jim Keays. ….. Karin Keays

Aarght Records was started by the members of the Ooga Boogas in 2007. The independent label has released thirty-two records, mostly by Melbourne artists. With a belief that the label a record is released on is possibly the least important aspect of that record, and with this in mind, do not use a company logo.

Starting back in 2013, by releasing a few demos, Cool Death has become one of Australia’s best  punk labels and the home to the likes of Straightjacket Nation, UV Race, Tyrannamen, Tommy T & The Classical Mishaps, Orion and Power. Run by artists who all play in bands associated with the label, “The only rule is COOL”.

Farmer & The Owl was set up as a label in 2014 after it’s founders had run a festival together under the same name a year earlier. Now with a roster of five diverse artists that all have releases forthcoming, the label is holding a Melbourne showcase with the majority of its roster.

Deaf Ambitions is a Melbourne-based record label.
Born from the ashes of a terribly designed and rather poorly written blog celebrating the minnows of Australian music, Deaf Ambitions’ current incarnation strives to serve the same primary purpose – to put that stuff where it belongs: out in the open, flapping about in the wind for all to swoon over and admire.
SPUNK started as a fanzine in 1994, In 1999 it became a record label & 17 years later we have released over 500 records from a large range of artists including Mac Demarco, Bill Callahan, Bat For Lashes, Ty Segall, Belle and Sebastian and Jason Isbell. With a passion for the discovery of local Australian and New Zealand music, Spunk’s Australasian artists include Tiny Ruins, Shining Bird, Holly Throsby, Aldous Harding, Flowertruck, Gold Class, Nadia Reid etc & of course the fine artists that are performing at this showcase! Thanks so much for performing the Ocean Party, Emma Russack, Machine Translations and Mining Boom.

Untzz Records start from what turned out to be a five-year-long weekly residency at the legendary Sugar Nightclub in Adelaide. All of the original artists on the label were also DJs, playing every Saturday night for five years.
After road testing original music week after week it became clear that we needed a platform to press the music to vinyl for keeps, and so the label was born. In three years the label has firmly established itself as a mainstay amongst the upper echelons of Australian club labels.

Sunday July 3 – Temporal Cast

Temporal Cast came into being out of an impulse to draw together what was, at the time, some disparate new talent emerging within Melbourne’s dance-music underground.
Since then, the acts which the label has been lucky enough to feature and support have grown into some of this city’s more sought-after names and the label itself has coalesced into something with more substance and momentum than what was ever anticipated.

This must see event of the summer featuresJIMMY BARNES, ICEHOUSE, JAMES REYNE, RUSSELL MORRIS and THE BADLOVES.

The home-grown Victorian event, which has become a favourite on the local festival calendar, has previously sold-out every year well in advance and 2016 promises to be no different.

ONE ELECTRIC DAY promoter Duane McDonald says he is excited to bring another great line-up of Australian music royalty to the stage and expects the 2016 event to be bigger than ever with industry giants Jimmy Barnes and Icehouse appearing on the same bill for the very first time. “ONE ELECTRIC DAY is a great family event for all ages,” he says.“We are proud to be able to bring such great artists to the one stage for music fans to enjoy. As a legend both from his time fronting Cold Chisel and his top charting solo career, Barnes has toured the breadth of Australia. He has an enviable back catalogue that makes for incredible live performances with songs like ‘Working Class Man‘, ‘When Your Love Is Gone and No Second Prize’ to name a few. With the announcement of his latest soul series album – which follows on from his Soul Deep (1991), Soul Deeper (2000) and The Rhythm and The Blues (2009) soulful installments – Soul Searchin’ explores Jimmy’s musical roots and is out on June 3. Jimmy Barnes takes to the stage in 2016 with rock n roll set packed with his greatest hits. Jimmy Barnes fact sheet available here.

FOUR LOU REED MOMENTS

0
four lou reed moments

(1) Launceston. 1972.

Listening to the first and second Velvets albums in Launceston (on vinyl – natch . . .) with my friend David Woodhall at his house. We were both 16 or 17. We smoked a lot of pot. At the end of the night – after multiple plays of Sister Ray – I said to David “what if we’re already dead and this is what happens next?” We were young but the Velvets were part of our psyche – then and now. We both owed Melbourne’s David N. Pepperell for the tip in the first place.

(2) Adelaide. 1974.

I’m in Adelaide as a Tasmania representative at the Under 18?s for the Australian Squash Championships. My friend David has asked if I want to see Lou that night. I go to the official opening party in my green blazer and nice pants then race to the venue. We’re in the 10th row. It’s AC/DC as the support. A month before Bon takes over on vocals. They’re wearing pink flares. Come the break and I’m feeling kinda self conscious in my squash party uniform. Did I say this was Adelaide in 1974?
Show time. The band hits with Sweet Jane as Lou wanders out. Amazing show. Two moments. Lou teases a guy near the front. Beckons him to get onstage and dance. Eventually the guy does, Lou turns his back as the bouncers throw the guy out. Show ends. Lou goes to leave. Doors only exist because of walls. Lou would appear to have a choice. He walks straight into the wall. His minders navigate the other option.

(3) Australia. 1985.

I’m managing the Hoodoo Gurus. We’re doing a national tour with Lou. I never get to meet him. But on the morning of our flight from Adelaide to Melbourne we’re boarding the plane and Lou and my eyes meet. He winks. That was it. Ken West promoted the tour. He used to have a framed tour poster on his wall. It read “To Ken – nice try – Lou.

(4) Sydney. 1995.

Lou and I are talking. My attempts at matching it with ‘intellectual’ Lou are falling flat. Questions about Paul Auster and Vaclav Havelare going nowhere. The conversation is spiralling – downwards. I mention the 30th Anniversary Bob Dylan show at Madison Square Garden. Lou become frighteningly nice: “You’ve got to understand, to my right was Booker T, behind me was Duck Dunn, and to the left was Steve Cropper for Christ’s sake . . . I was in heaven. I couldn’t even imagine more fun.”
From this point on Lou and I were bonding – over music. My closing to the story went:
Just as we hang up Reed tells me it was nice talking. Coming from him it’s a big compliment. Maybe he’s not so bad after all. Ten minutes later he’d dissecting a woman at Triple J with the sensitivity of a demented, pathological surgeon. Oh, that’s right. He IS an arsehole. An extraordinarily talented arsehole.

four lou reed moments

Things to listen to:

– All four Velvets albums – Loaded is my favourite followed by the Third Album
– Pretty much any version of ‘Sweet Jane’. The greatest opening riff in rock’n’roll history.
Live At Max’s and 1969 Live (double album) for the best glimpse of the Velvets live.
The Quine Tapes – cassette recordings by the guy who would later be Lou’s (inspired) guitar foil.
New York – for its searing dissection of New York.
Songs For Drella – Lou and John Cale pay a beautiful tribute to Andy Warhol.
– ‘Coney Island Baby’ – for the lines “I wanna play football for the coach.”
Rock’n’Roll Animal – Lou’s greatest post-Velvets live album.
Take No Prisoners – Lou’s second best (and nastiest – and funniest) live album.
– ‘Street Hassle’ – for the line “that bitch will never fuck again” and Bruce Springsteen’s cameo at the end.
– ‘Walk On The Walk Side’, ‘Vicious’, ‘Perfect Day’ – the hits. And they were great hits.
– ‘This Magic Moment’ – by Doc Pomus on Till The Night Comes: A Tribute To Doc Pomus. One of Lou’s heroes and a major inspiration for the Magic & Loss album.
Berlin – is this or Big Stars Third Album/Sister Lovers the most haunting album ever?
… I could go on.

Blood on the Dance Floor

0

Presented by lbijerri Theatre Company, Blood on the Dance Floor is a carefully crafted and well-wrought performance, brutally honest, it drives home a message surrounding the realities faced by those living on the margins of society, and those facing the challenge of living with HIV. For this alone, Blood on the Dancefloor should be praised, it’s a delicately balanced, highly autobiographical all times courageous, solo performer Jacob Boehme.

The performance begins from the moment audience enter the theatre, with Boehme, dressed in a silk kimono ushering people to their seats, the audience interaction here is perfect, it allows, from the outset, a sense of intimacy and comfort to be fostered, which is central to this works success. The dialogue in the opening scene is punchy, full of high camp melodrama, and a beautiful juxtaposition from which the following scenes unfold, centralized on the deaths left in wake of the HIV epidemic in Australia in the 1980’s and 90’s, going someway in giving greater clarity and depth. Its material that we have all been in contact with in some way, but here it is to an extent re-invented.

Aside from this material, connection to place, rejection and ancestry are also woven into this rich and sweeping narrative, reaching an emotional crescendo that is deeply effecting. Blood on the Dance Floor’s is made all the more compelling by the truth that lies behind the story, the connection between narrative and performer is illustrated and made all the more impressive by the direction given by Isaac Drandic. The choreography by Mariaa Randall is suitably emotive, however given Boehme’s impressive background in dance, more time for these segments should have been granted.

The production values are slick, with the use of projections again featuring in this performance, though a beautiful element, their necessity could be questioned, are such elements needed here? Or is this performance already owning of enough merit, to allow for such elements to be stripped back? Blood on the Dance Floor has an important message to communicate, and perhaps the use of such device ultimately detracts from the work as a whole. Music and sound design are equally well thought out, ultimately though these elements don’t really help in propelling the work forward, though certainly do not detract from the work as a whole, perhaps integrating more recognisable sounds or music would of provided a greater emotional hook.

The biggest question that remains is how successful Blood On the Dance Floor is in its wanting to generate much needed conversation surrounding HIV and the stigma attached, perhaps if this work was to be taken out of the somewhat elitist realms of theatre, then it would indeed be successful in its mission.

All in all, Blood on the Dance Floor is a performance driving by a powerful narrative, one which delivers a visual feast that is resonate, deeply questioning and an unflinching representation of the state of the here and now. It plays at Arts House until Saturday the 4th of June book your tickets here
