Kaesler Estate Mataro vines were planted in 1930. Alte Reben means “Old Vines” in German. 

2008 was the first release of a single vineyard Mataro, which was previously all used for the Avignon GSM. (Kaesler Avignon GSM is another wine worth seeking out) 

The 2008 Mataro was of such high-quality Kaesler decided to keep a small parcel separate in one-year-old French oak for fifteen months and bottled it as this straight varietal.

In the glass the wine is dark & dense this is a serious glass of red.

On the nose, I found rich dark fruits, warm earth, black coffee, and hints of oak and leather in that order. All this flowed through on the plate.  

In the mouth dark fruit, blackcurrant and liquorice hints that I found rustic, finishing with a little oak and dry tannins on the back palate. 

This wine has some time ahead of it before you pull the cork however it drinks well now after a long decant in this case, I let it open in the bottle for two or three days as the wine takes its time to fully open.

Eat with hearty food such as roast beef or a French lentil, vegetable hotpot.
