The Motley Bauhaus is closing out August with a characteristically unruly mixture of clowning, comedy, improvised music and community-minded art.
Operating under its enduring instruction to “Eat, Sleep, Art, Repeat”, the Melbourne arts venue has several events still to come, alongside an open call for its Midsummer program.

Motley Scratches: Clowns!
The week begins with Motley Scratches: Clowns! at 7pm on 24 August.
Hosted by Mel McGlensey, the event invites performers to experiment with new clown material in front of an audience. Participants can bring along the beginnings of a new clown routine or take an existing, polished piece and give it an unexpected twist.
It is a scratch-night format designed for creative risk-taking, new ideas and the gloriously unpredictable business of working out what makes an audience laugh.
Everybody Loves Law Revue
From 25 to 29 August, Everybody Loves Law Revue takes to the stage at 6.30pm.
The show turns its attention to love—or at least the strange, complicated and potentially non-existent forms it can take.
As the company puts it: love is complicated, and depending on who you talk to, it might not even exist.
Floppenheimer
At 8.30pm on 27 August, local goofball Ben Volchok takes charge of Floppenheimer.
The premise is delightfully dangerous: clowns are let loose onstage with absolutely nothing prepared, with Volchok directing the action live.
The result promises an evening of improvised clowning in which performers, director and audience discover what is happening at roughly the same time.
Wham Bam, Thank You Jam
The final Saturday of the month brings Wham Bam, Thank You Jam at 9pm on 29 August.
The one-of-a-kind jam invites audiences to join the performers for an unpredictable night of collaborative music and live experimentation.
Mud x Goblin
For those who believe art should begin before breakfast, Mud x Goblin runs from 7am until 10am on 29 August.
Early-entry tickets are available for people who arrive in time, with attendees able to pay the price difference if they arrive after 9am.
The event will raise funds for Grandmothers Against Removal and the Incarcerated Trans and Gender Diverse Fund, bringing music, visual art and community support together in one unusually early gathering.
