Some records search for answers. Unanswered is more interested in what happens while you’re waiting for them. Across four interconnected compositions, Francesco Virgilio’s mokroïé turns uncertainty into somewhere listeners are invited to inhabit. Questions of mortality, adolescence, grief and existence move through progressive electronics, organic instrumentation and psychedelic textures without being forced towards convenient conclusions.
Instrumental opener ‘Eternity’ tackles perhaps the largest contradiction available, our desire to keep living despite knowing that life must end. Sparkling electronics and organic textures create something closer to awe than fear, allowing existence to be felt rather than explained.
‘Over The Clouds’ continues that suspended feeling, moving from serenity towards uncertainty before ethereal piano provides comfort. Crucially, comfort isn’t presented as an answer.
The inward-looking ‘Teenage Sunday Sadness’ makes that uncertainty emotional, capturing the strange melancholy of adolescence and the experience of feeling something intensely without understanding why.
Closing track ‘Negative Space’, featuring Howlite’s Alison Thom, turns towards grief. Ethereal electro-pop and delicate orchestration surround the whispered “l’attente d’un retour”, waiting for a return, transforming absence into something almost physical.
Virgilio’s accompanying films deepen the experience, moving between cosmic dust, enormous skies, rain-soaked landscapes and fragments of ordinary life. Sound and image become inseparable, positioning Virgilio as much as a director as a producer.
Its title initially sounds like a problem. By the end, it feels more like acceptance. Unanswered doesn’t resolve mortality, melancholy or loss. Instead, mokroïé finds beauty in remaining present while the answer refuses to arrive.
