listen to older voices : judy donnelly - part 2Welcome to Listen To Older Voices, a program produced by Rob Greaves for Uniting Melba and podcast through the Toorak Times and Tagg

Listen To Older Voices presents the stories, views and opinions of our older citizens. It is predominantly in a life & times format, with interviewees reflecting upon their lives from earliest memories. An underlying principle of the program is to promote the concept of positive ageing, reinforcing the principle that older people have & continue to make a valuable contribution to both their local & wider community.

This is the second part of the three part story of the Life and Times of Judy Donnelly. Much of Part 2 of her story is taken up in understanding how the social changes in the 1960’s and into the 70’s helped shape her opinions, attitudes and values that she has carried through to her present life. Not for her the sorority based life other teens accepted while in High School, she was intrigued and drawn to the growing counter-culture and by the time she went to university, like many of her peers, it was social and cultural activities rather than study that were of prime consideration.

So it is in this second part of her story, that we learn how she took her love for music into a world she had not anticipated – the world of being a professional singer in a band, where she made a life long friend with the bands other female singer – Carla.

Now while this was enjoyable, Judy discovered that there was better money to be made in the world of advertising and jingles and so she left university to provide a voice for jingles and in doing so she carved out a good money making career.  As a result she did not to return to finish her degree for many years.

I have been with the Toorak Times since April 2012. I worked as Senior Editor of the Toorak Times until 2023, when I retired. I now work as a special features contributor for both the Toorak Times and Tagg. I've been in the Australian music scene as a musician since 1964, and have worked in radio and TV and newspapers (when they were actually printed on paper) as well as working in the film industry, as the Film Unit manager on Homicide for several years. I also have extensive experience in audio production and editing.
