I myself have struggled with Carménère over the years having tried several French and some from Chile and I think one from South Africa.
Either way, I have tried a lot, having said that its almost certainly not my first choice of wine for dinner.
Not that it’s bad or anything, I just haven’t found it to be that pleasing or that interesting.
Although one of the stand-out flavours and aromas in Carménère is crushed ants.
Now strange as this may sound that is the style of this wine and the first thing I look for when trying a new Carménère for the first time.
This wine was a little different, earthy I didn’t get the crushed ants or they didn’t stand out at the time.
I got a lot darker fruit than I was expecting, soft flowing tannins and not a lot of acid.
I got Blackberries and something else a bit more interesting on the plate. I found the wine interesting and flavoursome not what I was expecting from this grape verity.
If I had tasted the wine blind, I may have picked it as a Cabernet Sauvignon wine from anywhere else in the world other than Australia.
I enjoyed this wine with roast beef with poached mushroom gravy and crispy Hasselback potatoes.
Sounds stock standard I know, but the wine requires a hearty meaty dish with earthy flavours.
