London post-punk and ethereal-grunge quartet Dogviolet have released their debut EP Wilting, a four-track collection exploring inherited trauma, social injustice, family expectations and the conditions that shape who we become.
The idea of wilting sits at the heart of the record. Rather than representing an ending, Dogviolet see it as a form of endurance and a reminder that even when you’re placed in conditions that don’t allow you to flourish, there can still be hope.
Across Wilting, post-punk grit collides with gothic, shoegaze and grunge textures. Folk-influenced melodies drift through walls of distortion, while intimate moments build into something visceral and cathartic.
Lead vocalist and lyricist Naz Toorabally explains:
“Wilting felt like a fitting metaphor for a collection of songs about not losing hope in the face of adversity.”
Recent single ‘Daughter’ explores the pressures placed upon eldest daughters, moving from floating verses into biting guitars, thunderous drums and Toorabally’s powerful vocal delivery.
Elsewhere, ‘Fig Leaves’ tackles misogyny and feminist awakening, while ‘Black Walnut’ looks at societal breakdown and political leadership through dark psychedelic textures. ‘Daisy Crowns’ takes a more nostalgic approach, reflecting on carefree youth and the weight of adulthood through a hazy, shoegaze-influenced soundscape.
Produced by Dogviolet’s own Ella Patenall and recorded and mixed alongside Tom Hill, Wilting captures the band at their most expansive, balancing heavier textures with the spectral atmosphere that has become central to their sound.
Dogviolet’s roots stretch back more than 15 years, with Toorabally and Patenall first meeting in their Year 10 English classroom. Formed in 2022 and later joined by drummer Lauren Allpress and bassist Margot Cintract, the quartet have since built a reputation across London’s alternative scene.
Their live performances have seen them support Heartworms, The Wedding Present, L.A. Witch and Whitelands, while earning praise from publications including Dork, Atwood Magazine, Louder Than War and Clunk.
