CHARLIE NEEDS BRACES – ‘DARYUNG’

Charlie Needs Braces amplifies the story of the ‘Daryung’ with adventurous visuals + live experience at Natural Habitat Studios

“An energetic and pulsating rhythm is paired with a fresh, vibrant, bold, and bright melody that creates a beat-licious party bop. And that’s all before the brassy trumpet riff interjects mid-song with its sexy, jazzy tones bringing extra funk to ‘Daryung’ – overall it’s a song you’ll find hard not to groove along to.” – Scenestr

Proud GuriNgai woman, descendant of Bungaree and Matora, Charlie Woods reveals the latest sounds of her solo project Charlie Needs Braces with new single ‘Daryung’. ‘Daryung‘ is just the beginning of vocal and brass focused musical experience Charlie Needs Braces, a project ready and ripe with stories to share with a hope of connecting and unifying the community. Now, Charlie is here with a dynamic visual to accompany and tell the captivating story of the GuriNgai mob’s totem, the ‘Daryung’.

Created with Mr.Kapow the music video follows the story of two women in search of the Daryung (stingray) going from place to place round the beach, we came up with the concept of doing sand animation to portray the Daryung’s story which added lots of interest and was very fun to be creative in how to record and render the imagery in sync with the live action footage.” – Mr.Kapow

The playful filming perfectly captures the energetic essence of the track, and highlights the unparalleled beauty of the land of the Boonwurrung people, from the vibrant and vast ocean shore to the colourful rock faces reaching up to the sky. Charismatic sisters Charlie Woods and Miri Woods, portray an honest and candid view of their journey, enticing you to explore and dance along the beach with them.

“The Daryung Video Clip was extremely fun to make! In the story I wanted to draw on my own personal experiences of learning more about my cultural heritage and hear stories about Bungaree and the traditions of our mobs aquaculture.  Bungaree was known for throwing the Daryung back into the water when fishing and tending to our waters. In the clip my little sister Miri and I are searching for the Daryung, which is like we are searching for our culture, and in the fast motion sand art which Mr.Kapow and I created you see the stingray washes up onto the sand and then two people throw it back into the water where it belongs. Through the sand art I wanted to portray the idea that we need to look after our land and waters and respect the cultures and traditions of the First Peoples on this land.”  – Charlie

Charlie is no stranger to Australia’s vibrant music scene, sharing the stage with the likes of The Teskey BrothersGang of YouthsThe Seven Ups, TEK TEK Ensemble’, ‘WVR BABY’, making her mark in the industry with appearances on Spicks and Specks, The Set, and the Channel 9 Morning Show with The Teskey Brothers as well as Australian festivals Splendour in the Grass, Womadelaide and Blues Fest. As Charlie Needs Braces she has graced the stages of Melbourne Music Week, St Kilda Film Festival, Firelight Festival, supported The Seven Ups for their latest album launch, and Ziggy Ramo for his recent performance at The Prince Bandroom in St Kilda.
