HSBC GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL

HSBC GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL
The 2024 HSBC German Film Festival proudly presented by Palace in cooperation with German Films, will feature a superb selection of contemporary German cinema. This year the festival, which is pleased to welcome aboard new naming rights partner HSBC, screens from 7 May – 5 June at Palace Cinemas nationally, plus Palace Nova and Luna Palace Cinemas.

First highlights include the acclaimed new drama from Camera d’Or winning writer/director Claire Burger, FOREIGN LANGUAGE (Langue Étrangère), which arrives direct from the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale). Two foreign language students in Leipzig and Strasbourg forge a friendship through letters and language exchange in this impeccable, heartfelt drama, starring Nina Hoss as one of their mothers. Their bittersweet and boundary-testing friendship is strained as they grapple with how to understand themselves and the world that surrounds them.

Set in contemporary Berlin, comedy/drama ONE FOR THE ROAD stars festival favourite Frederick Lau (in an outstanding performance) alongside Nora Tschirner. A deeply touching and distinctly authentic story from director Markus Goller (25km/h GFF19), the film alternates between Berlin’s famous bars and sober therapy rooms.

Featuring an all-star cast, DARK SATELLITES (Die stillen Trabanten) is a moving ensemble drama set in nighttime Leipzig that tells three stories about the impossibility of love. Set amongst the everyday lives of its characters, these beautifully poetic vignettes feature an all-star cast including Nastassja Kinski and Albrecht Schuch.

Set in Switzerland on the cusp of WWII, historical drama LUBO centres around the superb performance of German star Franz Rogowski as a Swiss street performer. Featuring in the 'Beyond the Borders’ sidebar, which profiles German language films from other countries, Rogowski’s character seeks justice upon losing his family due to a national campaign to re-educate Yenish (a minority nomadic community) children in Switzerland.

From the popular ‘Kino for Kids’ sidebar, presented by the Goethe-Institut Australia, comes MISSION: SCHOOL OF FUN (Die unlangweiligste Schule der Welt – Auf Klassenfahrt). There is no such thing as boredom at school as the school day becomes a cinematic adventure in this imaginative tale following nine-year-old action fan Max, adapted from Sabrina J. Kirschner’s bestselling children’s book series.

Family friendly film THE FLYING CLASSROOM (Das fliegende Klassenzimmer) is a big-screen adaptation of Erich Kästner’s best-selling children’s and young adult's book of the same name. This thrilling and entertaining adventure features an outstanding cast of up-and-coming talent and will entertain film goers of all ages.

Two further titles for families and children will be announced in the full programme release in April.

ROOTLESS COSMOPOLITANS

ROOTLESS COSMOPOLITANS
Monstrous Theatre have just announced the world premiere of celebrated Australian playwright Ron Elisha’s dangerous comedy ROOTLESS COSMOPOLITANS. It will be directed by Suzanne Heywood and performed at Chapel off Chapel from 15th May - 2nd June 2024.

This timely and thought-provoking black comedy explores the polarising power of social media, antisemitism, and the minefield of identity politics.

The play centres around esteemed artistic director Ira Brot, who in six short years has transformed a small, struggling theatre company into an international sensation. Ira has the world at his feet - money, influence, and creative freedom – but one little tweet threatens to derail his perfect life.

Add to this his Jewish convert wife, a vaguely antisemitic theatre company Chairperson and an ambitious assistant director waiting in the wings, and you have the ingredients for the oldest of all culture wars, played out on a modern stage. Ira must also deal with a complex relationship with his mother who, although long dead, is alive and kvetching inside his head.

Hold Me Closer Tony Danza

Hold Me Closer Tony Danza
The starting point was a misunderstood Elton John lyric played to great comedic effect. This tension between “rightness” or “wrongness” framed a deeper, pop-cultural exploration of differences in opinion through club dancing and seamless partnering. - Limelight magazine

Get ready for a dance-off…

Hold Me Closer Tony Danza is bold, brash, non-conforming, and like a pop song you can’t get out of your head, deeply seductive. It is immersive dance-theatre that asks the audience to pick a side, show their true colours, and get ready for a dance-off as if their lives depend on it.

Rollickingly funny and deeply skilled dance technicians The Farm perform this one-hour ride, a Victorian premiere, commissioned by Monash University.

With an intensely satirical edge, Hold Me Closer Tony Danza confronts our modern world through the subversion of pop sensibilities. In a world driven by information overload, it asks how we can still connect with each other when we feel so far apart. A commonly misheard song lyric contains a deeper proposition about how we form meaning and a provocation that perhaps our understanding of the world is intrinsically flawed.

At The Farm work is made in a collaborative process where everyone brings their expertise without being confined to it. All animals are equal.

THE TASTE OF THINGS

THE TASTE OF THINGS
IN CINEMAS MAY 2
One of the most acclaimed French films of recent times starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel and directed by Tran Anh Hung, THE TASTE OF THINGS is a sensual ode to haute cuisine. In 1885, Eugenie, a peerless cook, has spent two decades working for the renowned gourmet Dodin, evolving their gastronomic partnership into a romantic bond. Their culinary creations astonish even the most esteemed chefs, yet Eugenie cherishes her independence and resists Dodin's desire for marriage. In a poignant gesture, Dodin strives to express his love through the intimate act of cooking a meal for her, a move that signifies a departure from his usual role in their relationship.

Stella – The Miles Franklin Story

Stella - The Miles Franklin Story
STELLA: The Miles Franklin Story – feat. Monique diMattina, Alma Zygier & Fem Belling

Songs, skits and gossip from a musical in development.

Acclaimed Australian composer/lyricist Monique diMattina presents a concert work-in-progress version of her newest project – STELLA: The Miles Franklin Story.

Sharing songs, stories, gossip and skits from this musical in development, Monique and her all-star chamber orchestra tell the extraordinary life story of Australian author Stella Miles Franklin.

Starring ALMA ZYGIER and FEM BELLING and featuring

The Brindabella String Quartet:

Fem Belling, Xani Kolac, Esther Henderson, Kalina Krusteva

The Talbingo Band:

Monique diMattina, Cat Canteri, Adrian Perger, Sam Lemann, Ben Robertson

Although the Miles Franklin Award is Australia’s most prestigious literary prize, most Australians are unaware that Miles was a woman, let alone the details of her extraordinary life.

Weaving together songs, gossip and Stella Miles Franklin’s own words, the show brings audiences on an epic journey from Franklin’s Snowy Mountains childhood to fame as the young author of My Brilliant Career, years battling for women’s suffrage and labour rights in the USA and UK, WWI field work, creative struggles and legacy as a trailblazing champion of Australian art, conservation and culture.

STELLA: The Miles Franklin Story will make you laugh, cry and love what Stella called ““our unique, inebriating, laughing, haunting, wistful, brooding, ancient, ageless, siren land”
