LUKE LAMBERT SPARKLING CHARDONNAY 2011

0

This Sparkling Chardonnay, comes from the Yarra Valley its had wild yeast fermentation, wild malolactic fermentation, no temperature control and stored on lees in old French oak barrels prior to secondary fermentation in the bottle. No fining or filtration.

Tiraged July 2012. This means basically, the wine is mixed with an active yeast culture and a specific quantity of sugar so that once it is in bottle it will ferment. Carbon dioxide gas is a by product of fermentation and this is trapped inside the sealed bottles, producing bubbles. 2011 Yarra Valley Vintage Report – Chardonnay was looking particularly good. And fruit for Sparkling Wine is also excellent. Disgorged October 2013 Zero dosage Alc 12.5% Now that’s all the technical stuff out of the way thanks to C’ellar Vie.

I don’t usually supply this info, however this wine knocked me for six never have I been so impressed with an Australian sparkling wine before I just had to look it up for my own interest. Now to the real story I went out to dinner last Saturday night with people in the wine trade, so the wine list went on and on. Things that I haven’t tasted before. Including this 2011 sparkling wine from Luke Lambert.

I tasted this wine from three different Riedel glasses, a vintage Champagne flute, a Shiraz glass, a Sangiovese glass and guess what? Champagne Flute – medium size bubbles streaming up the side of the glass and lots of citrus fruit on the nose and on the plate. Sangiovese glass – bubbles from the centre of the glass with citrus and savoury apple on the nose in the mouth mature round savoury apple with citrus lifting plate.

The Shiraz glass – Wow the yeast was dominant with soft ripe pear on the nose, the flavour citrus apple pear all fantastic. Sorry I didn’t even look at the bubbles I just wanted smell this wine for ever. The difference a glass can make to the smell and taste of a wine is incredible. Conclusion – I may have just tasted what I think is one of Australia’s best sparkling wines, if not certainly the best that has come from the Yarra Valley ever. MAX @Winereviews

No Name Nebbiolo Italy – Piemonte $60.00 – $70.00

0
Friday night and I am drinking a No Name Nebbiolo from Barolo In reality its a declassified Barolo. No its not from a poor vintage, this has been done as a silent protest aimed at the Italian wine authority because for years the winemaker has been at logger heads to get this vineyard classified, in the end he just said bugger and bottled it.
It receives reviews of 90 points and beyond vintage after vintage. Yes its good and for around $70.00 a bottle you get the real deal, that’s providing you are a fan of big bold tannic Italian wines that are loaded with personality and flavour profiles you will not find in an Australian wine and if you got these tannin and acid levels in an Australian wine you would be shocked. Nebbiolo starts out quite dark but in only a year or two in bottle it has faded to a lighter brick red already.
On the nose this wine was old world with stacks of sweet red roses backed up with dried leathery cherries with smoky liquorice. In the mouth all this is repeated, supported by layers of tannin and firm acid taking hours to soften and show some riper fruit that leaves the mouth pleasantly dry on the finish. NOW get this clear Big Bold Italian wines need FOOD!!
The best food is the food from that area of which the wine comes. I had pan fried pork eye fillet with creamy mash potato topped with a sprinkling of shaved black truffles. PS. If you think the wine was expensive try the pig with truffles and mash. It gave the credit card a workout but you only live once.

RODNEY CARRINGTON

NEW SYDNEY & MELBOURNE LATE SHOWS ADDED TO THE HERE COMES THE TRUTH TOUR THIS AUGUST – ON SALE NOW

Having already sold out shows in Sydney, Melbourne and two in Townsville, red-blooded, Texan-born country comedian Rodney Carrington’s Here Comes The Truth Tour, his debut tour of Australia, is shaping up to be one of the hottest comedy tours of the year.

Due to overwhelming demand, Frontier Comedy is thrilled to announce two new late shows at Sydney’s Rooty Hill RSL and Melbourne’s Palms at Crown Casino, kicking off at 10pm following Carrington’s already announced sold out performances. These new late shows are on sale now.

Carrington has sold over three million albums, starred in the hugely popular 2004-2006 sitcom Rodney, saw a staggering nine million viewers tune in to catch his one-hour Comedy Central TV special, and is one of the USA’s Top 10 highest-grossing touring comedians.

Leave your pre-conceived ideas and political correctness outside: Rodney Carrington live is unadulterated, outrageous, (occasionally) sexually charged – and ALWAYS hysterically funny! His most recent album, Laughter’s Good, was released on his own label Laughter’s Good and hit #1 on the US Comedy charts.  Check out his latest YouTube Bit By Bit series here.

Rodney Carrington goes where other comics fear to tread. Don’t miss out!

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF AUSTRALIAN CULTURE AT RISK

Artistic Directors speak out against Next Wave’s de-funding Former and current Next Wave

Artistic Directors Marcus Westbury (Founder, Renew Newcastle, author of Creating Cities and CEO,Collingwood Arts Precinct), Jeff Khan (Curator and Artistic Director of Performance Space, Sydney), Emily Sexton (Head of Programming, the Wheeler Centre and Sidney Myer Creative Fellow) and current Next Wave Artistic Director Georgie Meagher are devastated by the $165,000 per year loss to the organisation. This cut comes in addition to the loss of $500,000 per year to present the highly successful JUMP Mentoring Program on behalf of the Australia Council.

Emerging artists have been hit hardest with mentoring programs, career capacity building,
residencies and secondments de-funded. Alongside Next Wave, vital youth arts
organisations including Express Media, Emerging Writers Festival and PACT Centre for
Emerging Artists will all operate on severely reduced budgets, damaging their ability to
employ staff, help artists find suitable careers, and present new work across literature,
performance, dance and visual arts.

Next Wave is a unique organisation across Australia. Says Jeff Khan on behalf of Marcus and
Emily: “Our time as Next Wave Artistic Directors gave each of us the platform to develop
professionally, and step into the leadership positions we occupy today. In our current roles,
the biennial Festival remains our most critical touchstone when looking at new artists, new
ideas and new practices in the arts in Australia.”

Emily Sexton adds “it’s a tremendous shame that Next Wave’s ability to support the new
generation of artists will be constrained, right at moment where the organisation has been
working with important new voices from less privileged backgrounds.”

The 2016 Next Wave Festival – having closed on Sunday 22 May posting box office records
and critical acclaim – is widely regarded as the nation’s premier organisation for young and
emerging artists. The organisation supports and invests in innovation across all artforms,
and is a leader of experiences inclusive of artists and audiences with disabilities. In recent
years Next Wave has heralded the next generation of Indigenous artists with nationally acclaimed programs including JUMP, Blak Wave, and this year’s Indigenous Language
Workshops, alongside a consistent history of new commissions and presentations by the
next generation of Aboriginal artists.

Next Wave’s artistic strength and national significance is affirmed by its extraordinary reach
and breadth of national partnerships, which in recent years have included the National
Gallery of Victoria, PACT Centre for Emerging Artists, Malthouse Theatre, the Australian
Centre for Contemporary Art, Critical Path, Performance Space, Perth Institute of
Contemporary Art, Metro Arts, Carriageworks, Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for
Languages and Asialink.

Marcus Westbury asserts “It’s a false economy to destroy the platforms from which artists
can take risks, develop new skills and explore new ideas. In a country that is supposed to be
investing in agility, innovation, risk and ideas this is the very part of the arts ecosystem that
is being destroyed.”

All four arts leaders join the calls from state theatre companies, major performing arts
organisations and state contemporary arts organisations for Australia Council funding to be
restored to 2013-2014 Budget levels, and that full CPI indexation be applied to all Australia
Council funding programs. To this end, cultural innovation, jobs and growth will be assured
– for all generations of Australians.

Marcus Westbury, CEO, Collingwood Arts Precinct

Bedroom Suck Present: Totally Terrible

coming up at shadow electric: totally mild, terrible truths and more

Nearly one year on since the ‘Totally Terrible’ tour swept the UK & Europe, label mates Totally Mild and Terrible Truths re-unite to take the stage together in Melbourne. After both releasing their debut albums in 2015, these bands are again working head-to-head, currently involved in putting the finishing touches on two brand new records made earlier this year in Melbourne.

Joining the tour are another band who have recently emerged from a ramshackle home studio in Collingwood, where they were busy weaving together the fabric of yet another soft masterpiece, the enigmatic Lower Plenty. The band will showcase a variety of material from this new record, due for release later this year via Bedroom Suck.

We will also be joined by Perth’s sun-dreached melancholic Childsaint, on their first trip to the East Coast off the back of their new single, Hallelujah Heartache, as well as Melbourne favourites Pillow Pro with their new single Juice Hoops.

UNTZZ / Label of Love
w/ Mic Mills & Furious Frank, Freddie Norwood & Arthur Miles, Babicka

Untzz Records start from what turned out to be a five-year-long weekly residency at the legendary Sugar Nightclub in Adelaide. All of the original artists on the label were also DJs, playing every Saturday night for five years.

After road testing original music week after week it became clear that we needed a platform to press the music to vinyl for keeps, and so the label was born. In three years the label has firmly established itself as a mainstay amongst the upper echelons of Australian club labels.

Even though originally started as an outlet for guilty pleasures and “not so serious” music, sister label Big D releases have flown off the shelves and seen comparisons to early pioneers of sample-based house music a’la Theo Parrish and Daft Punk thanks to heavy contributions from the pen names of FIO, MM, BD  & LK to name a few.

Temporal Cast / Label of Love
w/ Cale Sexton, Kangaroo Skull, Jamal Amir & Chiara Kickdrum

Temporal Cast came into being out of an impulse to draw together what was, at the time, some disparate new talent emerging within Melbourne’s dance-music underground.

Since then, the acts which the label has been lucky enough to feature and support have grown into some of this city’s more sought-after names and the label itself has coalesced into something with more substance and momentum than what was ever anticipated.

This showcase features live sets from three Temporal Cast mainstays – Cale Sexton, Kangaroo Skull and Jamal Amir – as well the newest addition to the label: Chiara Kickdrum. Support before and between sets from X Axis.

Emilie Huertevent

Opening Night:  2 June 2016, 6.00 – 9.00pm

Exhibition dates:  3 June – 12 June 2016, Thursday to Sunday, 11am – 6pm

Emilie’s work captures the ideas, movements, and feelings of the moment.  Opening her new exhibition ‘Infant Earth’, she aims to transport the beholder into a world of full and deep energy. Her idea is to confront the beginning of Earth, when Nature was overriding, with today’s world and how humans are altering it by their unconscious actions. The best way to describe this new exhibition is probably to use the words of Shree, who follows Emilie’s work (about the painting called ‘Cave’): I get a feel of diving into the depth of my mind. Deep cave in perpetual darkness.

Join us on the opening night for a first look at the exhibition over a glass of wine and a chance to meet Emilie herself and learn more about her art.

70 Years The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan

0
On 25th May 1946 – to this day 70 years ago – a new Kingdom was born. H.H. Emir Abdullah of Transjordan (1921 – 1946) proclaimed the independent Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and he became His Majesty King Abdullah I.

King Abdullah I bin al-Hussein

Abdullah I bin al-Hussein, was born in February 1882 born in Mecca, Hejaz, which then belonged to the Ottoman Empire, and he was the second of three sons of Hussein bin Ali, Sharif and Emir of Mecca and his first wife Abdiyya bint Abdullah. He was educated in Istanbul, Turkey and Hijaz. From 1909 to 1914, Abdullah sat in the Ottoman legislature, as deputy for Mecca, but allied with Britain during World War I. Between 1916 to 1918, working with the British guerrilla leader T. E. Lawrence, he played a key role as architect and planner of the Great Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule, leading guerrilla raids on garrisons.

When he assumed the Throne of Transjordan in 1921, he established the first centralised government out of a mostly tribal and nomadic society in this territory. Over the next 30 years, he focused on nation building and developing the institutional foundations of modern Jordan. He is also remembered for promulgating Jordan’s first Constitution in 1928 and holding the country’s first parliamentary elections in 1929.

During these three decades, King Abdullah I presided over a series of Anglo-Transjordanian treaties, culminating in the 1946 Anglo-Transjordanian Treaty, ending the British mandate and granting the new Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan full independence. He laid down the basis for democracy in the Kingdom and called for political pluralism. The first political party was formed during his reign. A poet himself, he used to meet with poets, writers and scholars and discuss the country’s affairs.

On 20th July 1951, King Abdullah, while visiting Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, was shot dead by a Palestinian from the Husseini clan. He was succeeded by his son King Talal bin Abdullah (26th February 1909 – 7th July 1972). Under the reign of King Talal the country prepared a new liberalised Constitution in 1952, which introduced a culture of Arab unity by declaring Jordan part of the Arab nation. During the short reign reign, Jordan concluded important agreements including a pan-Arab collective security agreement and announced compulsory free education. The introduction of compulsory free education, the first of its kind in Jordan and the Arab world, had a positive impact on the country’s future development.

King Talal bin Abdullah

Born in Mecca in 1909, King Talal studied at the British Military Academy, Sandhurst, and in 1929 became the first Jordanian officer to graduate from the institute. As an officer of the Arab Army, he participated in battles between Arab and Israeli forces in Jerusalem, Ramallah and other Palestinian towns. In 1934, he married Zein Al Sharaf, the late Queen Mother, who died in 1994.

He was King of Jordan from 20th July 1951 until forced to abdicate in favour of his son Hussein due to health reasons on 11th August 1952.

Hussein ibn Talal was born on 14th November 1935, in his parents’ villa in Amman, in what was then the Emirate of Transjordan. His family’s circumstances were modest. Though heir to the throne, his father, Talal ibn Abdallah, supported his family of three sons and a daughter on an allowance of pounds 1,000 a year. Hussein received his primary education at schools in Amman and then at 13 was sent to Victoria College, Alexandria, an Egyptian boarding school on the British model. He recalled repairing his school uniform with a needle and thread to spare his parents the expense of replacing it.

Prince Hussein was standing only a few feet away when his grandfather was murdered, and saw the king’s bloodstained turban roll across the floor in front of him. The 16 year-old only escaped death himself by what seemed a miracle: a bullet aimed at him struck a medal on his uniform. He was thrown backwards but otherwise unhurt; his grandfather had given him the medal only the day before.

At the time of his coronation, on 2nd May 1953, Hussein was just 18 (by the Islamic calendar). His cousin Faisal II of Iraq  was crowned King of Iraq on the same day. Having ascended the throne as a teenager, he was as a young king the target of numerous attempted coups and assassinations. Later, two Arab-Israeli wars and a civil war threatened the existence of his throne and the state itself. He was under threat as much from political enemies among his Arab neighbours as from a militarily superior Israel.

The result of King Hussein‘s determination to safeguard his position is a country which enjoys a degree of openness, stability and prosperity not widely achieved by other Arab states. The King also secured the prize that had eluded his predecessors: a peace treaty with Israel.

King Hussein was motivated by a strongly mystical, if sentimental, belief in his own destiny as the only remaining Hashemite king. His dynasty traced its ancestry back to the Prophet Mohammed and beyond, and had ruled Mecca for seven centuries until it was seized by Saudi forces in 1925.

King Hussein and Princess Muna with their sons, Prince Abdullah and Prince Faisal, later followed the twins Princess Aisha and Princess Zein.

But in King Hussein’s mind the ideal of a universal Hashemite monarchy persisted, taking the form of a benign authoritarianism that drew legitimacy from Islam and the traditional values of the desert Arab.

At the end of July 1998, it was made public that King Hussein was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. On 7th February 1999, King Hussein died of complications related to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was, at the time of his death, one of the longest-serving leaders in international politics. He had been the King of Jordan for over 46 years. His successor was his eldest son, Crown Prince Abdullah.

Just present and fourth King, Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein was born on 30th January 1962 and has been the King of Jordan since he ascended the throne on 7th February 1999 upon the death of his father.

King Abdullah II and Queen Rania with their children, Princess Salman, Prince Hashem, Princess Iman and Crown Prince Hussein.

He was born to King Hussein and his second wife, the British-born Princess Muna al-Hussein. Abdullah was named Crown Prince shortly after his birth. King Hussein transferred the title to his own brother, Prince Hassan, in 1965, only to return it to Abdullah in 1999. King Abdullah is married to Queen Rania of Jordan, who is of Palestinian origin.
