“An energetic and pulsating rhythm is paired with a fresh, vibrant, bold, and bright melody that creates a beat-licious party bop.” – Scenestr
+ announces debut album Saltwater People for release in 2023
Brass and looping luminary Charlie Needs Braces is back telling tales with her trumpet in her latest single ‘Yanoo‘, receiving it’s first radio spin on Triple J’s Home and Hosed and online premiere on Backseat Mafia ahead of its release today.
‘Yanoo’ is the second single to be lifted from Charlie’s debut album titled Saltwater People due for release Friday 10 February 2023. A proud GuriNgai woman, a descendant of Bungaree and Matora, Charlie, launched the year of Charlie Needs Braces in full swing with her first single ‘Daryung‘, and made her mark on the music industry with the single added to rotation on PBS FM, RTR FM, and Triple J Unearthed, plus a 7- week spot on the AMRAP Charts and the music video featured as ABC Rage’s Wild One.
Selected as part of the 2022 Top Ten Upstart Awards, ahead of the release, ‘Yanoo‘ sees Charlie weaving elements of the GuriNgai’s language amongst her story of unavoidable endings in this upbeat and harmony filled single. Charlie will take her vocal brass musical journey to Gaso Upstairs on Thursday 3 November for a Triple Launch with Rosie Rai, and Kid Dingo.
Meaning ‘goodbye’ in Charlie’s mob’s language, ‘Yanoo’ draws on those familiar endings to friendships and relationships we all experience at some point in our lives, and the inevitable sadness and grief we feel. Featuring Charlie Woods on vocals, Trumpet, and Loops, sister Miri Woods on backing vocals, and Michael Saxall on Percussion, ‘Yanoo’ brings the familiar Charlie Needs Braces energetic and loop driven grooves with her distinctive brass flare, but a lyrical dissonance as she sings of the hardships and questioning with walking away. Co-Produced by Charlie with Mr. Kapow, the track was recorded and mixed by Mr. Kapow, mastered by Guy Louis Faletolu, and supported by Creative Victoria.
“Yanoo means goodbye in my mob’s language and is inspired by all the inevitable and natural endings we all go through at some point in relationships. “ – Charlie Woods
Charlie’s vibrant presence is familiar across Australia’s music scene, having shared stages with The Teskey Brothers, Gang of Youths, The Seven Ups, TEK TEK Ensemble’, ‘WVR BABY’ and more, with appearances on Spicks and Specks, The Set, and the Channel 9 Morning Show with The Teskey Brothers as well as Australian festivals Splendour in the Grass, Womadelaide and Blues Fest.
Charlie’s live performance has graced the stages of Melbourne Music Week, St Kilda Film Festival, Cullulleraine Music Festival, supporting The Seven Ups for their latest album launch, and Ziggy Ramo for his recent performance at The Prince Bandroom in St Kilda.

‘Yanoo ‘Lyrics
Yanoo
This is the end, I am not your friend, I’ve waited and I’ve waited for so long.
The trust that I receive, is not reciprocated, and you just keep me waiting for too
Long.
And you know what I do to you, I say yanoo, and you know what I do to you, I turn
my back on you and I tell you, yanoo, yanoo, yanoo, yanoo, yanoo, yanoo.
It’s been some time, and you haven’t come through, leaving me know choice, for
you are so untrue, the trust that I receive, is not reciprocated, and you just keep
me waiting for too long.
And you know what I do to you, I say yanoo, and you know what I do to you, I turn
my back on you and I tell you, yanoo, yanoo, yanoo.
I don’t understand why’d you bite this hand, the hand that feeds you, and breeds
you why’d you bite this hand.
I don’t understand why’d you bite this hand, the hand that feeds you, and breeds
you why’d you bite this hand.
Yanoo, yanoo, yanoo, yanoo.
