Christie emigrated to Australia in 1863. Leaving the rolling hills of Scotland behind in search of adventure, it was here his career as a detective began. From an opium smuggler to a diamond thief, he was a chameleon who mastered the art of disguise.

Have you ever wondered what the dais in the centre of the Dome was used for?
There was once a time when Library staff sat perched above the desks, ensuring silence was maintained, otherwise known as the ‘Chief Shusher’. Due to the panopticon design, paired with a mirror above their head, staff had full view of the La Trobe Reading Room from the dais.
With great ‘shush’ comes great power. Take a seat in the ‘Chief Shusher’s’ chair, experience the Dome before it opens and hear captivating tales on our new guided tour of the Library.
