Blain Crellin speaks with TRIPOD here:

Tripod Christmas Turkeys – Two big nights of Tripod at MEMO Music Hall – Friday 9 and Saturday 10 December  – 8pm

Christmas. We can’t avoid it. Not saying we want to. Well, sometimes we might. But it’s not going anywhere. Therefore, let’s hear some songs about it. Specifically, let’s hear Tripod poke their harmony-laden musical sticks at Christmas this year.

They might even stealthily make you feel Christmassy.

Since their earliest shows Tripod have made a consistent habit of juggling comedy, music and narrative in endless exhilarating combinations, consistently evading neat definitions whilst always striving to stay worthy of their fans’ time.

Tripod continue to bring an insane level of craft in both comedy and music and combine them in a rich and satisfying way – an ability that has cemented them as a much loved cultural fixture in Australia.

Xmas Turkeys promises to be a hilarious mix of suburban whimsy and dark satire, the perfect Christmas gift for those that love or hate Christmas and everything in between.

“…there’s hardly time to catch your breath in between bouts of uncontrollable laughter… these guys are unbelievable musicians too. Sometimes five stars just aren’t enough” The Scotsman, Edinburgh

“Tripod could be a comedy trio or just a very strange, very talented rock band” Adelaide Advertiser

Life
I am the magician
With my staff and sword.
I wield towards
A knowing end,
But along the journey
Be loving and gentle,
Until shadows reveal
A mirror of self.
An imaginary shadow
Of living and life lived,
Etched upon the world.
It’s message is there
And everywhere
Never to be erased, as all
Who have come before
Have etched their lives
On the curtain of the
Universal wall.

Legendary Melbourne rockers’ first two albums now available on vinyl, CD and digitally with bonus tracks.

Sydney headline show SOLD OUT. 2nd announced and selling fast.

With special guests Bloods + Wild Honey

Following the announcement that one of Australia’s most successful rock bands of all time, JET, are reforming to hit the road with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in February 2017, the band have reissued their first two albums ‘Get Born’ and ‘Shine On’ on vinyl, CD and digitally. Both the CD and digital reissues come with rare previously unreleased digitally re-mastered recordings from each period.

Of the reissues and bonus tracks, drummer, vocalist and song writer Chris Cester says:

“We’d sit around on beer crates in our early days at first the pub we played at making our first moves. Nic always used to say if the song is good you can do anything with it. This was a wild time, and a really creative period. These demo recordings and b-sides were lost for years but then re-appeared down the line somehow. I love these songs dearly, even the unfinished ones.”

In addition to the Bruce Springsteen tour, JET will also play two very special headline shows in Sydney at Taronga Zoo. With the first show selling out in record time, a second show is now on sale and selling fast.

Photographer: Phil Knott

JET quickly conquered the world after forming in 2001, selling more than 6.5 million albums globally and securing 10 x Platinum certification in Australia and Platinum in the USA and UK for their 2003 debut album Get Born. The album produced a string of classic singles in Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Rollover DJ, and Look What You’ve Done and netted the band 6 x 2004 ARIA awards. Both “Are You Gonna Be My Girl” and “Cold Hard Bitch” peaked at number 1 on the US Modern Rock singles charts and propelled the band to the top of festival bills and charts around the world.

In 2006 Jet were named APRA’s Songwriters of The Year and for three years running Are You Gonna Be My Girl was the most performed Australian song overseas.

JET’s follow up album “Shine On” followed in 2006 and was rammed full of another collection melodic rockers including Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, Bring It On Back and Rip It Up, and achieved platinum status in Australia on the back of stand-out headline shows around the world, and an unforgettable Big Day Out run in 2007.

UK production of Trainspotting to open at Fortyfivedownstairs 22 March – 13 April 2017

trainspotting

Based on the novel by Irvine Welsh, adapted by Harry Gibson Directed by Adam Spreadbury-Maher

Tickets on sale on Tuesday 29 November Sex, drugs and 80s trance. Trainspotting Live will immerse you into Irvine Welsh’s drug fuelled modern classic as it bursts into life at Fortyfivedownstairs in March 2017

Following sold out and extended seasons in the United Kingdom, Andrew Kay and Associates present the King’s Head Theatre and an In Your Face production of Irvine Welsh’s cult, generation-defining novel Trainspotting.

This adrenalin filled production recaptures the controversy of the famous novel and globally successful film, and repackages it into a totally immersive production to portray the underground drug scene in a smacked-out Edinburgh. Kicking off with a rave complete with strobe lighting and glow-sticks, audiences are given a no-holds-barred, close-up view of the lives of Renton, Begbie and Sickboy as they are thrown head first into a world of hedonism and the bleak reality of heroin addiction.

“I was shocked… and I wrote the f*cking thing!” Irvine Welsh Choose us. Choose life. Choose mortgage payments; choose washing machines; choose cars; choose sitting on a couch watching mind-numbing and spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing f*ckin junk food intae yir mooth. Choose rotting away, pushing and shiteing yersel in a home, a total f*ckin embarrassment tae the selfish, f*cked-up brats ye’ve produced. Choose life. Harry Gibson’s original stage adaptation, written before it became the famous blockbuster film, was instantly successful and controversial, and won the Sunday Times Award for Best New Play.

For this 21st anniversary production, In Your Face Theatre’s have created a snappy and vibrant affirmation of the power and humour of the piece. This all Scottish cast features Rachael Anderson (June), Chris Dennis (Begbie), Calum Barbour (Mother Superior), Greg Esplin (Tommy), Michael Lockerbie (Sickboy), Erin Marshall (Alison) and Gavin Ross (Renton).

Director Adam Spreadbury Maher was born in Australia and now lives in London. He is the Artistic Director of the King’s Head Theatre in Islington and founding Artistic Director of OperaUpClose.

Previous directing work includes: A Tale of Two Cities (King’s Head & Australia), Dead Party Animals (Hope Theatre), Studies For A Portrait (White Bear), The York Realist and The Sleepers Den (Riverside Studios), Hannie Rayson’s Hotel Sorrento And in Australia Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing and Joe Orton’s Loot.

“Brutally honest, unfiltered, heart wrenching, this production will make you uncomfortable, in the best of ways.” Edinburgh Evening news ★★★★★

“Trainspotting’ offers some of the most arresting, exhilarating theatre you’ll probably see in years.” Three Weeks★★★★★

NICA’S HIGH OCTANE CIRCUS GRADUATES

NICA: The Landscape Project

An amorphous cloud of high – revving molecules, continually on the move, fusing ,unfusing climbing, jumping, bumping, entangling ,disentangling

They hone ‘em well at National Institute of Circus Arts Australia (NICA). The performers don’t wear the spangly , glittery costumes of yore, but they sparkle with the effervescence of youth.

The latest crop of bright young things to emerge from three years of intensive circus arts training exhilarated the audience last night with their graduating NICA performance The Landscape Project . Perky, cheeky air of young children having boundless fun. Don’t be deceived, they’re risking life and limb to entertain us. They’ve put a lot of blood, sweat and ice-packs into perfecting their bodies and minds to do what most of wouldn’t have a hope in hell of doing.

The Landscape Project is a three Acter brilliantly directed by Debra Batton.

nica’s high octane circus graduates

The First Part with its subdued lighting and khaki shorts and tops reminded me of a boy scout campfire. Yet it was primal and earthbound with bodies strewn all over the floor, slowly coming to life here and there as individuals emerged to do their thing. Simple props like rows of champagne bottles to balance on, chocks of wood to clack together –  a clumsier version of indigenous music sticks.A night landscape punctuated here and there by a few strums of a guitar nearby, a flute somewhere else.

The Second and Third Parts ramped up in colour and action as each of the 14 graduates from all over Australia and New Zealand strutted their stuff . They rose to greater heights as the set provide several different physical levels to operate  upon – and under. As an ensemble, the performers explored every nook and cranny of the stage landscape.

I particularly liked the inventive ways the audiences’ eyes were directed all over the landscape of the large stage to focus on particular acts. For example,  once it was a ball rolled across stage from one group to another.  Another time,  two performers stared intently through giant binoculars to make our heads turn to see what they were looking at.

The wow factor was rampant. The students’ hard work paid off as they trapezed, juggled, hooped, balanced, trampolined, acrobaticked, entwined their bodies with single ropes suspended from the ceiling – all the usual circus skills but choreographed in fresh new ways.

Even though they worked as an ensemble, the different personalities shone through as they each showcased their expertise and uniqueness.Their quirky, fun touches totally captivated the audience .

For example, the routine of the  juggler who always whispered in a loud stage whisper to the audience and his two accomplices was a real attention grabber and very cute.

The petulant girl who always wanted to perform with the wooden chair only to be upstaged by others was a contrasting thread throughout.

The flexuality of the androgynous contortionist, who must have had some high tech hip transplants to be able to swivel those ball & socket joints 360 degrees, defied any notion of body limitations.

The subtle campy body language and facial expressions of the 3 young men exiting from their balancing act, was somehow both suggestive and innocent. It certainly raised a warm chuckle in the audience.

All fourteen of these super graduates were brilliant, energetic, flying high in their circus arts. One can only wish each one  a bright future. May they wow many more audiences.

Thank the Powers that Be, that funding was not withdrawn from NICA. The excellence of the Institute’s training and choice of students is world class and worth every bit of hoolah  – moolah spent on it.

Vivienne Westwood and Deborah Thomas in the 1990’s.

0
vivienne westwood and deborah thomas in the 1990's.

Canberra in the early 1990’s when Lionel needed a media pass Canberra the early nineties I needed a Media Pass-ticket to the National Gallery to review The Fashion Show, a spectacular exhibition of fashion to be opened by the extraordinary Vivienne Westwood. The media had swarmed which left no tickets for us little reviewers to the extravagant Gala opening Night. An emergency phone call to Deborah Thomas then the Editor of Vogue in Sydney whom I had known from art school in Melbourne followed. She called me back in Canberra, she was in a similar pickle, she couldn’t get any accommodation anywhere in Canberra. Problem solved, one condition I would have to partner her for the opening, and she could stay at my apartment…too easy.

That Saturday I picked her up at Canberra airport in my 1960’s VW Beetle in time to change into our party gear then on to the show. Before going to the airport I had yet to interview and photograph Vivienne Westwood at the press launch. At the launch I presented Ms Westwood with a Titty mug, a penis shaped lipstick, and a string of condoms, on behalf of all the working girls in ACT (the sex industry workers). She loved the interview, which was partly captured by the local TV News crew. “Mmmmh I hope I get to use all of them” (referring to the colored condoms), Westwood purred. The TV camera’s shut down and the interview was over, this lady was far too raunchy for poor old Canberra.

On the strength of that interview, she awarded me a personal invite to the opening of the show. She also asked me to invite a dozen or more “close and personal friends” to a private lunch around the pool at the National Gallery sculpture garden the next day. A few calls that night to Melbourne and my friends Allison Kelly a Curator, Michael Nicholls of the NGV Melbourne, and others arrived in town for the lunch and show. .

Melbourne Milliner Peter Jago turned up in cockatoo feathers upstaging Viviennes outfit somewhat, and he was not invited to lunch (my decision, not Viviennes). Later that night Deborah and her entourage of black clothed fashion magazine editors, Cosmo Elle etc, tracked me down in a downtown Canberra nightclub, OOPS I’d lost her at the opening, and she didn’t know my address or have a key. Dropped Deborah off at airport on way to lunch with superstar Vivienne Westwood, thanks Deborah and Vivienne.
