There’s a controlled volatility running through “Daughter”, the latest single from London’s Dogviolet and a key preview of their forthcoming debut EP Wilting. It’s a track that feels permanently poised between eruption and restraint, holding itself together just long enough to make the eventual release feel all the more forceful.
From the outset, Dogviolet lean into contrast. Ethereal textures drift across the surface, but underneath them sits something far more jagged: distorted guitar tones, tight, propulsive drumming, and a sense of emotional pressure that never fully dissipates. The band’s self-described “ethereal-grunge” identity feels particularly accurate here, as the track constantly shifts between atmospheric shoegaze haze and post-punk immediacy without ever settling comfortably in either space.
Produced by the band’s Ella Patenall alongside Tom Hill, “Daughter” captures Dogviolet at their most direct and physically present. There’s a rawness in the mix that feels intentional rather than unfinished—like the song has been allowed to breathe in its most unstable form. Vocally, Naz Toorabally moves between restraint and rupture, gliding through the more delicate passages before snapping into sharper, more confrontational phrasing as the track builds. That dynamic gives the song its emotional architecture: a steady escalation from internalised tension to outward release.
Lyrically, “Daughter” is rooted in the suffocating psychology of familial responsibility, particularly the expectations placed on eldest daughters. Rather than treating this as a fixed narrative, the song unpicks it from within, examining the contradictory impulse to hold everything together while simultaneously feeling consumed by that very role. The idea of becoming the “sun and water” for a family becomes a striking metaphor for emotional overextension, where care curdles into obligation and identity becomes indistinguishable from duty. There’s a clarity in how the band frame this experience: not as abstract angst, but as a lived, looping negotiation between guilt, love, and exhaustion.
That emotional intensity is mirrored in the song’s structure. “Daughter” steadily accumulates force, layering guitars and vocal lines until it tips into a final stretch that feels deliberately unhinged. The band reportedly leaned into that instability in the studio, stacking guitars and pushing the arrangement into near-overload rather than smoothing its edges.
There are echoes here of shoegaze and gothic-leaning alternative rock, but Dogviolet never feel like they are simply occupying familiar territory. Instead, they use those textures as a framework for something more immediate and personal. Even at its most expansive, Daughter retains a sense of intimacy, as if the sound is constantly circling back to the internal space it began in.
As a preview of Wilting, the single suggests a band increasingly confident in their ability to balance beauty and abrasion. Dogviolet don’t smooth over their contradictions, they amplify them, letting them sit side by side until they become the point.
