Darkly Funny and Painfully Human, We Chat to Jayne Steer Ahead of her Melbourne International Comedy Festival Return

Jayne Steer lost her mum, her fiancé and her mind – in that order, all two weeks before her nine-night Melbourne International Comedy Festival debut. Now she’s back, stronger than ever, with her new show Addikted. We were honoured to chat about current addictions, music and comedy in our quick chat with Jayne.

Your upcoming comedy show is called Addickted, is there anything your currently obsessed with? Peanut m&ms! But that’s an always obsession I think.  Lately, it’s been the CBK & JFK Jr Love Story, I can’t get enough of them.

What or who made you fall in love with comedy? My dad.  Growing up in harsh circumstances and poor means that you need to make your own comedy and find humour in the bleak.  My dad introduced me to Wallace & Gromit, Austin Powers, Black Books and  Monty Python which guided me through my childhood.

If Addickted had a soundtrack, what hit song’s would it be associated with?Obviously Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer, but I prefer the Florence and The Machine version.  Songs like, Never Be The Same by Camilla Cabello and Lover Girl by Laufey really get the essence of the show, but I think Fabulous – Meek really truly speaks to the soul of it all.

What’s a spoiler for Addickted that won’t make sense until you see the show? He genuinely did make his money with that imprisoned celebrity, but through fashion not oil.

What was the process like of writing this show? I started comedy and writing comedy when my mother was diagnosed with MND- ALS about 2 years ago because I needed a creative outlet.  Originally I thought my first show would be about her, but then when I went to Thailand for Trauma Rehab and discovered a whole new world of incredible characters and stories.  A lot of it was actually written in Thailand during the 3 months I was there, while a lot of the refinement has happened in Australia.

Catch Jayne Steer at Melbourne International Comedy Festival at Underground Comedy from 9th April – 19th April. Grab your tickets here
