Jennifer Ross | Australia

Radio wouldn’t play it, but when punk exploded onto the Australian music scene, it was met with just as much fierce and protective love as it was derision. Beneath the mohawks, the piercings and the screaming were artists who had something to say about society. Award-winning shorts filmmaker Jenny Ross makes her feature debut with a far-reaching story that travels from Perth to Rockhampton to Sydney and Melbourne. Through music, photos, archival footage and testimonials, the film rediscovers how these radical musicians and activists found transgressive alternatives to the status quo, and in turn battled with the harsh realities of housing, duress from police, drugs and grief. Age of Rage presents a raucous tour into a raw and unfiltered subculture; like punk itself, it’s a force to be reckoned with.

Magnus Gertten | Sweden
Powerful and intimately revolutionary, Nelly & Nadine is a deeply moving love story between two women who survived the horrors of WWII and smashed social taboos to pursue their love.

FAIRYTALE
Alexander Sokurov | Russia
Master filmmaker Alexander Sokurov (Russian Ark) imagines a reunion in purgatory between Hitler, Stalin, Churchill and Mussolini, appearing as themselves in ‘deepfake’ archival footage.

Q&A with Chan Tze-woon
Winner of Hot Docs, Blue Island is an elegiac film confronting the depressed state of Hong Kong protestors in the wake of China’s 2020 national security law with a longer history of the island as a site of refuge.
Alon Schwarz | Israel
Filmmakers investigate controversial events at the Palestinian village of Tantura in 1948, where survivors claimed to witness a massacre of civilians by Israeli troops. An exploration of Israel’s founding myth and the country’s inability to come to terms with its dark past

Zanny Begg | Australia
Bringing together actors, performers, activists, stripers, sex workers and beekeepers, artist and filmmaker Zanny Begg explores the unsolved murder of Sydney anti-development campaigner and glamorous style icon Juanita Nielsen in 1975.

GEOGRAPHIES OF SOLITUDE
Jacquelyn Mills | Canada
For over 40 years environmentalist and naturalist Zoe Lucas has been living alone on Sable Island, surrounded by herds of wild horses and many seals, birds, and insects. A visually stunning portrait of both the island and its only human inhabitant.

An uncompromisingly independent filmmaker, Les Blank made documentaries for nearly fifty years, elegantly disappearing with his camera into cultural spots rarely seen on-screen—mostly on the peripheries of the United States, but also occasionally abroad. His interests were eclectic, producing films such as Burden of Dreams which follows a perilous Werner Herzog production and Always for Pleasure which immerses us in New Orleans Mardi Gras celebrations (both playing at the festival). The films selected for this retrospective cover the major themes of Les Blank’s career – filmmaking, folk music, food, and festivals.
