Goodnight Moonshine document life in flux on ‘Business Unusual’

Goodnight Moonshine’s ‘Business Unusual’ emerges from a life upended. After decades on the road, guitarist Eben Pariser and vocalist Molly Venter were forced to swap touring for raising three children, including newborn twins, when the live music world shut down in 2020. The album captures that delicate balance between creativity, responsibility, and emotional strain, turning the chaos of domestic life into a quietly compelling reflection on ambition, love, and exhaustion.

Sonically, the record sits at the intersection of folk intimacy and jazz-inflected fluidity. Pariser’s guitar favours space and improvisation over flourish, while Venter’s smoky, grounded vocals lend every track a lived-in clarity. Songs like “Kitchen Table” transform everyday domestic moments into understated revelations, pairing acoustic warmth with subtle melodic hooks. Bassist Adam Chilenski and drummer Ryan Sands provide a flexible, intuitive foundation, while Grammy-winning engineer David Seitz preserves the raw immediacy of largely live, unedited takes.

‘Business Unusual’ extends its ethos beyond sound. Before its digital release, Goodnight Moonshine hand-delivered nearly 1,000 copies to their community, framing the album as an act of connection as much as a creative statement. In turning the ordinary into something resilient and profound, the album asserts that while the past self may be gone, the present one is stronger, wiser, and fully alive.
