Generation Clay: Reimagining Asian Heritage is an exhibition celebrating the vibrant versatility of clay, by a new generation of Asian-Australian contemporary artists.

Opening celebrations on Saturday 3 August include an Artist Market, featuring 35 stallholders, including artists from the exhibition and a special Tea Ceremony.

Tea Ceremony with Jayanto Tan

Sat 3 August, 9.30am – 10.00am

FREE, Gallery

Taking place within the Generation Clay: Reimagining Asian Heritage exhibition, in conjunction with the small work fairy tales from the celestial garden, Tan has created the lament of a tea ceremony performance that echoes the sound of a loved one. The performance of gathering and drinking the green tea whilst creating a magical sound from teacups collected from community, symbolises the act of sharing cultural knowledge. Bring your own tea cup to participate in a short ceremony.

Artist Market

Sat 3 August, 10.00am – 2.00pm

FREE, Bunjil Place Foyer

For lovers of art, design and craftsmanship, don’t miss the Bunjil Place Artist Market, where we celebrate the opening of Generation Clay: Reimagining Asian Heritage. Featuring unique artworks by some of the exhibition artists alongside makers and artists from across the region. A diverse selection of artworks, handmade objects and unique ceramics will be on offer.

Generation Clay: Reimagining Asian Heritage has been curated by Vipoo Srivilasa an award-winning contemporary artist, and curator; he invited fourteen artists from across Australia to create a new work using a palette of predominately blue and white. These works re-imagine cultural expectations, presenting a fresh perspective within a traditional colour palette and form.

Blue and white ceramics have a long and complex history tracing back centuries from early Islamic and Chinese wares.  Together, these artists are redefining traditional and ceramic forms to reflect their personal histories and memories, cultural heritage, and family tied to mythological and popular culture narratives.
