Cork’s ever-expansive live house and techno collective BoolaBoom return with “Too Much,” a single that doesn’t just build on their momentum, it stretches their sound into darker, more introspective territory without sacrificing the euphoric energy that defines them. Known for their explosive fusion of house, techno, samba percussion, and big-band jazz, the 22-piece outfit once again proves that scale and subtlety can coexist, even within the most high-octane arrangements.
“Too Much” feels like a natural evolution. Where previous releases leaned into unfiltered celebration, this track introduces tension, both sonically and thematically. Driven by a relentless sub-bass pulse and punctuated by razor-sharp horn stabs, the song simmers with a sense of urgency. The addition of vocals, still a rarity in BoolaBoom’s catalogue, adds a new dimension, grounding the track’s conceptual weight in something more immediate and human.
At its core, “Too Much” is about temptation: the blurred line between indulgence and excess, and the quiet self-deception that lets us push that line further than we should. That push-and-pull is mirrored beautifully in the arrangement. Feverish brass sections and layered backing vocals create a sense of escalating chaos, only for the track to unexpectedly collapse into a stark, beatless pause. It’s a striking moment, almost uncomfortable in its stillness, before the groove surges back with renewed intensity.
What makes BoolaBoom stand out is their ability to translate this kind of emotional complexity into something physically felt. Even at its most introspective, “Too Much” remains undeniably danceable. The groove is infectious, the rhythms deeply rooted in samba traditions, and the sheer force of a 20+ piece ensemble gives the track a visceral, almost overwhelming presence.
That scale, of course, is part of the band’s identity. With a 12-piece horn section and 10 samba drummers, BoolaBoom operate in a space few others dare to occupy. Yet rather than feeling excessive for the sake of it, every element here feels intentional, each layer contributing to the track’s sense of controlled chaos.
There’s also a certain self-awareness running through the project. The band’s reflections on excess, both in life and in managing a 23-piece ensemble, add a subtle layer of humour and humanity. It’s this balance that keeps “Too Much” from becoming heavy-handed. Instead, it feels lived-in, relatable, and honest.
Ultimately, “Too Much” captures BoolaBoom at a fascinating point in their evolution. It’s darker, more refined, and more conceptually ambitious, yet still rooted in the joy and communal energy that have fuelled their rise. As they continue to blur the lines between club music and live performance, this latest release reinforces their position as one of the most innovative and exciting acts operating at the intersection of house, jazz, and global rhythms.
It’s chaotic. It’s thoughtful. And, fittingly, it might just be exactly enough.
