Alaskan Tapes & Blu Miles Create a Weightless Ambient World on ‘Blank Slate, Open Space’

Canadian ambient composer Alaskan Tapes and Portland-based artist Blu Miles come together on Blank Slate, Open Space, a quietly breathtaking collaborative album that transforms physical distance into emotional intimacy. Built across continents, time zones, and shared sonic intuition, the seven-track project unfolds with remarkable fluidity, creating a listening experience that feels deeply human, immersive, and almost weightless in its emotional reach.

At the heart of the album lies “In-Cloud,” a serene and meditative centerpiece featuring multi-instrumentalist Ann Annie. The track encapsulates everything that makes this collaboration so compelling: patience, openness, and a profound understanding of atmosphere. Beginning with delicate piano motifs before gradually introducing saxophone, guitar, clarinet, and ambient textures, the composition moves like shifting weather, soft, expansive, and constantly evolving without ever losing its stillness.

What’s most striking about Blank Slate, Open Space is how seamlessly it erases the idea of separation. Although much of the album was created remotely, with ideas passed back and forth over thousands of kilometres before Blu Miles eventually travelled to Toronto to complete the sessions in person, the music never feels fragmented. Instead, it radiates closeness and trust, as though every note emerged from the same shared breath.

“In-Cloud” exemplifies this beautifully. Guitar tones stretch into vaporous textures while woodwinds pulse gently beneath the surface, blurring the line between organic instrumentation and ambient manipulation. The track feels alive in subtle ways, constantly shifting, swelling, and dissolving with the kind of quiet movement that rewards complete stillness from the listener.

Across its concise twenty-minute runtime, the album functions almost like a collection of emotional snapshots. Tracks drift in and out with understated elegance, never demanding attention yet remaining deeply absorbing. There’s an honesty to the compositions that makes them feel less like performances and more like captured moments, fleeting thoughts preserved in sound.

The reinterpretation of “Oversky,” originally composed by Luke Howard and Nadje Noordhuis, is particularly affecting, retaining the emotional delicacy of the original while folding it naturally into the album’s dreamlike atmosphere. Elsewhere, “Rosewood” expands into something more cinematic, allowing subtle crescendos and layered instrumentation to emerge without disrupting the project’s carefully balanced sense of calm.

Rather than relying on grand gestures, Blank Slate, Open Space thrives in restraint. Every sound feels intentional, every silence equally important. The album embraces ambient music not simply as background listening, but as an emotional environment, a space designed for reflection, stillness, and presence. It invites listeners to slow down completely and engage with the smallest details: the decay of a piano note, the breath inside a saxophone phrase, the soft hum beneath a melody.

Both Alaskan Tapes and Blu Miles bring years of experience within modern ambient composition, and that maturity is evident throughout the record. There’s a confidence in how patiently these songs unfold, never rushing toward resolution, never overcrowding the sonic space. Instead, the album trusts simplicity and emotional intuition to carry its weight.

With Blank Slate, Open Space, Alaskan Tapes and Blu Miles have created something quietly profound, an album rooted in connection, vulnerability, and shared creative openness. “In-Cloud” serves as the perfect introduction to that world: gentle, immersive, and deeply restorative. In an increasingly noisy landscape, this is music that offers something rare, space to breathe.
