gather your friends to come and see some fabulous art this winter

Well, here we are again in Lockdown 4.0 Melbourne. We know what to do, we’ve been here before. Let’s hope we are back doing all the things that Melbourne offers very soon.

The gallery is closed, and we are all back working from home. Like the last lockdown, our little team has got together to provide you with a host of great content for you to explore and inspire your day.

We have some great events coming up, so get your future self sorted with some excellent conversations to be had.

Stay safe and well good people,

Melinda, Lyn, Juliette, Mathieu, Linda, Chloe, Hana and Ada

P.S. Special thanks to our very excited homeschooled assistant, Florence, who leapt at the chance to teach us all she knew about magic tricks so we could share them with you.

NATASHA BIENIEK > CONNECTING WITH NATURE

Natasha Bieniek’s current solo exhibition, Halcyon, is a celebration of the green spaces that mean so much to us all. The artist believes that time spent in nature and in gardens improves our mental wellbeing. Her exhibition encapsulates the calm and tranquillity that can be found when we connect with nature.

If you’re a St Kilda local, then you will recognise the scene captured above is of one of St Kilda’s own green gems – the St Kilda Botanic Gardens. If you’re lucky enough to have this space within your 5KM radius, or any green space for that matter, maybe consider prioritising a daily dose of the green stuff to keep yourself feeling fine.

Like to learn a little more about Natasha and her practice. We have got you sorted.
Join Director Melinda Martin for an intimate conversation with this six-time Archibald Prize finalist, to learn more about her practice and discuss her most recent works

TEACH THE KIDS SOME NEW TRICKS
> MAGIC TRICKS

Ruth Höflich’s current exhibition, To Feed Your Oracle, was inspired by the WG Alma Conjuring Collection, held at the State Library of Victoria. William George Alma (1904–93) was an Australian magician and manufacturer of conjuring apparatus and props. His collection of books, photos, posters and research notes on every aspect of magic and conjuring contains over 4,000 items.

If you have a budding magician in your house, here are some simple magic tricks to practice. We don’t recommend researching how to saw your sister in half….that is not magic and will leave scars!

These tricks require some patience and dexterity to master.

If a conjuring collection has you intrigued and you would like to learn more about what inspired Ruth’s exhibition. Join our Curator Juliette Hanson for a thought-provoking conversation with leading mid-career Melbourne based artist Ruth Höflich, to explore the ideas behind her work and practice.

ADULTS’ ACTIVITY > WELLNESS DEITIES

Vipoo Srivilasa’s paintings in Wellness Deity explore the artist’s personal experience of overcoming some of the negative thoughts that he encountered during Melbourne’s second lockdown. Vipoo channelled these uncomfortable feelings into positive thoughts for self-improvement seeing him emerge with new skills, having ventured into painting, a new medium that has expanded his artistic practice.

These paintings act as a gentle reminder for us all to try to channel our own negative thoughts and feelings and to practice our own mindful ways of focussing on the positive. Explore some activities to help you find that inner calm.

+ Mindful body scan

+ Tai Chi guided meditation

If you’d like to learn more about Vipoo’s practice and work. Join Curator Juliette Hanson in discussion with Vipoo.

THINGS THAT MADE US HAPPY

The Netflix series Nailed It! takes cake artistry to a whole new level, with surprising and hilarious results. In the latest season, themed Double Trouble, home-baking enthusiasts battle it out in pairs to recreate edible masterpieces by head judge Jacques Torres, famous French pastry chef and chocolatier who also goes by the moniker ‘Mr. Chocolate’. It’s a recipe for giggles and culinary mishaps, hosted by the effervescent American comedian Nicole Byer. If you’re looking to lift your lockdown baking game this time around, Nailed It! is a playful guide to the dos and don’ts of novelty cake-making.

We’ve all seen images of cars backed up at COVID testing sites across Melbourne, but sometimes it’s not just humans waiting patiently in their vehicles. ‘Swab Dogs of Insta’ features more than 280 snaps of furry friends – dogs and (unimpressed) cats – accompanying their humans as they queue up to be swabbed. We all need a little bit of animal joy at the moment, and this page truly delivers. Do you recognise any of these treasured pets?

IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Speaking of cakes, who’s currently at home craving the Chocolate Kooglhoupf from Monarch Cakes.  Do you know someone who will be celebrating their birthday in lockdown? You can order cakes online to be delivered throughout Melbourne and with a little bit of extra notice, Monarch Cakes can even send their sweet treats by post! The Chocolate Kooglhoupf is so popular that it has been ordered by people all over Australia, so those a bit further afield get to experience love at first bite. Monarch Cakes have been using the same recipes for over 80 years and are known for their famous Plum Cake, which uses very little butter (sorry, butter fiends) and a whole lot of dark plums. There are plenty of decadent varieties on offer, whatever your preference!

ST ALI

ST. Ali is a coffee institution in Melbourne (which is no mean feat), but did you know they also sling cocktails, whisky, beer and wine for those of us who are ready to restock the drinks cabinet? They even have an extremely limited, 21-year-aged whisky from Yamazakura, Japan for the connoisseur/collector. If you want ST. ALi to do all the work for you, check out their Cascara Negroni and Espresso Martini bottled cocktails. Voilà!

PATIENT WOLF DISTILLING CO

Meanwhile, Patient Wolf Distilling Co. have kindly made their cocktail recipes available to the public, which you can view on their website. Hop onto their online shop to order booze and mixers so your at-home version tastes just like the Patient Wolf original!

MEATSMITH

And finally, Meatsmith is making lockdown gift-giving a cinch: they offer an online-only gift voucher for those who’d prefer to browse the virtual “shelves” and have their food and drinks delivered. Check out their range of curated gift selections and gift vouchers available at specific price points for their sumptuous hampers and wine packs. As Meatsmith says, when you can’t decide on the perfect gift for a loved one, give them “the gift of choice”.
