Accidental Writer | Alex Cafe | Episode 1

Alex Cafe explores the world of the writer… not just authors but screenplay writers, songwriters, poets, in fact, any writer since the phrase “The pen is mightier than the sword” was coined. Authors Dick Gross AM and Susan Berg host the show with contributions from poet Hamish Danks Brown and the occasional guest writer for interviews, new releases, and live performances. In this show, Dick and Susan talk about their writing careers and Hamish Danks Brown gives the rundown on poetry. There is also a preview of Keith Bulfin who will be featured in episode two. Dick Gross

Dick Gross AM Dick has written several fiction and non-fiction works, on topics ranging from atheism to merchant banks: Money for Jam, How to spread it and not make a mess (1990) Tricontinental: The Rise and Fall of a Merchant Bank with Hugo Armstrong (1995) A Godless Gospel (1999) Jesus, Judas, and Mordy Ben Ruben: Three good Jewish boys in Jerusalem (2005) Dick is an Australian politician and was a long-serving councillor of the City of Port Phillip and its mayor from November 2018 till late 2019, having previously served from 1998 to 2000 and in 2004. He was not re-elected to council in the 2020 election. He has also served as the President of the Municipal Association of Victoria. He is known for his enthusiastic style of highlighting important social and legal issues in the community. Susan Berg

Susan was the sole survivor of a boating accident at the age of 15 that claimed the lives of her parents and brother. Suffering from survivor guilt, she delved into a life of self-loathing, poverty, and despair. Decades later, Susan has healed her life and faced her greatest fears. She is now an ultra-marathon swimmer, preparing for a solo crossing of the English Channel. Susan has spent her life learning valuable lessons about overcoming trauma and how to find peace and happiness within herself. Now, in consultation with leading experts in trauma recovery, mindfulness, and meditation, Susan has developed “Reflect – Recover – Thrive”, weekend getaways and retreats, designed to help others learn the tools to truly enjoy life, regardless of what life has thrown at them. Hamish Danks Brown 

Hamish, a.k.a. Danksta Downunder is a 63-year-old poet and spoken word artist who has had a diverse career in the arts and media since the 1970s. He has been a youth worker, kitchen hand, cleaner, publishing clerk, promotions assistant, media researcher, theatre company manager, antiquarian bookseller, and live-in carer for his parents who have also been voluntarily involved in the community and regional arts and writing. While living in Queensland he became a member of the oUTsideRS Art Inc, a spoken word troupe, in 2005 and since then has performed and published frequently across Australia, North America, Europe, and Asia, mostly in English and sometimes in French. Since moving to Melbourne in 2016, where his family history goes back to the gold rush in the 1850s, he has been active in the poetry and spoken word community including emceeing events, launches, and open mic nights. He is a committee member of the Melbourne Poets Union, has published 2 chapbooks ‘All Other Destinations’ and ‘The Broken Candle’, and has cultivated online networks with poets and writers from around the world. The Alex Café has a low-key private art aesthetic. Lit by natural and ambient lighting, so comforting in this harsh world the cafe feels like a hidden basement speakeasy.

The Alex Cafés decor, however, is unlike anything you would see in an antique cafe. The walls of the cafe reflect the cafés modern take on the 1920’s private nature of a bar where access is only by invitation when you know the hidden symbol, and enjoyment was prohibition’s worst-kept secret.

Admission to The Alex Café is through your creative imagination only making access to the establishment elite to those in the know… Supporting those who love writing and reading.

Mick Pacholli

Mick created TAGG - The Alternative Gig Guide in 1979 with Helmut Katterl, the world's first real Street Magazine. He had been involved with his fathers publishing business, Toorak Times and associated publications since 1972.  Mick was also involved in Melbourne's music scene for a number of years opening venues, discovering and managing bands and providing information and support for the industry. Mick has also created a number of local festivals and is involved in not for profit and supporting local charities.
